King Charles may wear the crown, but even the monarch is not safe from a badly timed bird attack.
The 77-year-old king was left with a very noticeable white stain on the back of his jacket after a seagull appeared to poop on him during a public visit to the seaside town of Newcastle, Northern Ireland, on May 20.
But instead of storming off, changing immediately, or making a fuss, Charles did what royals are trained to do best: he kept calm and carried on.
The king continued greeting locals, shaking hands, smiling for the crowd, and joking about the embarrassing mishap as if nothing had happened.
The messy moment happened while Charles was walking along the coast, where seagulls were circling overhead near the Irish Sea.
One bird apparently decided to give the king what one local jokingly called “a very Ulster greeting.”
The large white mark was clearly visible on the back of Charles’ tailored jacket, but the monarch refused to let the awkward accident ruin his day.
When someone in the crowd pointed it out, Charles laughed and quipped, “At least it didn’t land on my head!”
The joke drew laughs from well-wishers and proved the king still knows how to handle an uncomfortable public moment with a little humor.
Video of the moment quickly made the rounds on social media, where royal watchers praised Charles for not letting the bird-dropping disaster rattle him.
There was an unfortunate incident with a seagull in Newcastle, Co Down, this morning but King Charles shrugged it off, joking with the crowds ‘at least it didn’t land on my head!’

“He dealt with it perfectly,” one fan wrote, adding that the children in the crowd looked thrilled when the king shook their hands.
Another viewer insisted the incident was not bad luck at all, writing that bird poop is often considered a sign of good fortune and prosperity.
A third joked, “Even the seagulls wanted to meet the king.”
The monarch appeared to change into a similar-looking suit later in the day, as the stain was no longer visible during his other stops.
After the seaside incident, Charles continued his royal duties around Newcastle, a small coastal town with a population of roughly 8,000 people.
He visited The Pantry food bank, where he helped pack boxes filled with essentials such as bread, eggs, toiletries, and other supplies for people in need.
Charles praised the volunteers for their work, telling them, “You are all very special people; what you do is so important.”
The king also stopped by Newcastle Community Cinema, a local movie house launched by film lovers in 2008 that has since become a popular social hub for the town.
The low-key outing in Northern Ireland was a far cry from Charles and Queen Camilla’s recent high-profile visit to the United States.
The royal couple were welcomed with full pomp and pageantry during celebrations marking America’s 250th anniversary, including multiple visits to the White House.
President Donald Trump, a longtime royal admirer, hosted Charles and Camilla for a glittering state dinner alongside First Lady Melania Trump.
Charles also delivered a speech celebrating the historic relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States.
In one cheeky moment, the king presented Trump with the original brass bell from the Royal Navy World War II submarine HMS Trump.
“May it stand as a testimony to our nation’s shared history and shining future,” Charles said. “And should you ever need to get hold of us, well, just give us a ring.”
The royals were also celebrated at a glamorous New York City event for The King’s Trust, where guests included Anna Wintour, Martha Stewart, Lionel Richie, and Donatella Versace.
But this week, Charles traded celebrity parties and white-tie glamour for a small-town walkabout — and one very bold seagull.
Still, the king proved once again that whether he is standing beside world leaders or wiping bird poop off his jacket, he knows how to keep the royal show moving.
