Fans at an Eric Clapton concert in Spain got more drama than they bargained for after the legendary rocker abruptly walked off stage when an object came flying out of the crowd and smacked him in the chest.
The shocking moment happened during Clapton’s long-awaited return to Madrid on May 7 — his first performance in the city in 25 years. The 81-year-old guitar icon had just finished performing his hit Cocaine at the packed Movistar Arena when a fan allegedly hurled what appeared to be a vinyl record sleeve directly at him.
Videos now spreading online show the object flying toward the stage and hitting Clapton as he turned to leave. Instead of brushing it off, the visibly irritated music legend immediately exited without performing his usual encore, leaving stunned fans wondering what had just happened.
Concertgoers reportedly expected Clapton to return for his traditional performance of Bo Diddley’s Before You Accuse Me, which he’s been playing throughout his 2026 tour. But after the bizarre incident, the show was suddenly over.
Despite the scare, Clapton was reportedly unharmed and continued his tour just days later with a concert in Barcelona.
The Layla singer has largely stayed out of the spotlight in recent years, making the Madrid appearance especially significant for longtime fans. That’s part of why the incident quickly exploded online, with many calling out the audience member responsible for ruining the end of the concert.
One fan wrote online, “Who throws something at an 81-year-old legend?” while another called the moment “disrespectful and dangerous.”
Clapton’s team has not publicly commented on the incident.
The legendary guitarist isn’t slowing down anytime soon, though. Clapton is still scheduled to headline a major summer concert at the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk as part of the HeritageLive festival series.
Festival organizer Giles Cooper praised the star ahead of the event, calling him “one of the greatest musicians of all time” and promising fans an unforgettable night.
For now, though, the viral Madrid moment has people talking for all the wrong reasons. What was supposed to be a triumphant return turned into a chaotic ending no one saw coming.
