Ashley Judd is opening up once again about the painful childhood she says she endured growing up in the shadow of her famous family — and fans think her latest emotional Instagram post may have taken a heartbreaking swipe at her late mother, country legend Naomi Judd.
The 58-year-old Hollywood star, best known for movies like Double Jeopardy and Kiss the Girls, shared a deeply personal message Tuesday about feeling abandoned as a child while her mother toured the country as one-half of The Judds alongside sister Wynonna Judd.
“There was no parent (or adult) supporting, nurturing, guiding and reinforcing my learning, delighting in, or protecting that little girl,” Ashley wrote in the emotional post.
The actress went on to reveal she has little memory of celebrating birthdays growing up — something she recently tried to heal from in a surprising way.
For her 58th birthday, Ashley decided to recreate the 12th birthday party she says she never really had as a child.
“Have you ever considered, from your adult perspective, restaging for your sweet inner child an experience she either never had at all?” she asked followers.
The actress shared photos of herself dancing barefoot with friends, laughing around a chocolate cake topped with the number 12, and embracing what she described as the carefree joy she missed growing up.
“We backfilled what was always missing and no longer is,” Ashley explained. “Thanks to vulnerable imagination.”
The Oscar-nominated actress said the gathering included square dancing, childhood games, and even an unusual activity where guests anonymously wrote down embarrassing sixth-grade memories and placed them in a jar for others to read “with empathy.”
Ashley has spent years publicly discussing the trauma she says came with growing up inside one of country music’s most famous families.
According to a source close to the actress, Ashley has been on a “long journey” to reconnect with herself and rediscover the happiness she believes was missing during her early years.
“She wants to experience the joy she never had as a child,” the insider told Daily Mail. “Her hope is to lose all the drama and expectations and splash around like a silly child enveloped in light.”
The actress has increasingly focused on healing, spirituality, and self-discovery in recent years — especially following the devastating 2022 death of her mother Naomi Judd, who died by suicide at age 76 after a long battle with mental illness.
Ashley has spoken candidly about the heartbreaking moment she found her mother after the tragedy and has repeatedly emphasized that Naomi suffered from severe depression and bipolar disorder.
“The disease of mental illness was lying to her,” Ashley previously said while discussing her mother’s death. “She deserved better.”
The actress has also revealed her own struggles with childhood trauma and depression, including being molested at age seven and later seeking treatment for unresolved grief and sexual abuse.
Unlike her mother, Ashley says she found recovery after entering treatment in 2006.
“I carry a message of hope and recovery,” she said.
Once one of Hollywood’s biggest leading ladies — starring alongside stars like Matthew McConaughey, Morgan Freeman, Al Pacino and Robert De Niro — Ashley has largely stepped away from the spotlight in recent years.
After suffering a horrific leg injury in the Congo in 2021, the actress slowed down professionally and focused more on personal growth, education, and what she calls reconnecting with her “inner child.”
And judging by her latest post, that emotional healing journey is far from over.
