Worker Buried Alive After 50,000-Gallon Asphalt Tank Ruptures

A devastating industrial accident in Texas has left one worker dead after a massive asphalt spill buried him alive under scorching material.

The tragedy happened around 3:30 p.m. at a Martin Asphalt facility in South Houston, near Christy Place and Texas Street, according to local officials.

Authorities say a tank carrying roughly 50,000 gallons of hot asphalt suddenly ruptured, sending a wave of searing liquid across part of the site. The worker was caught in the spill and became trapped beneath what officials estimate was about three feet of asphalt.

Sources say the material was around 210 degrees—hot enough to cause severe burns almost instantly.

Emergency crews, including HAZMAT teams from the Houston Fire Department, rushed to the scene. However, recovery efforts were difficult due to the extreme conditions. It took time before responders were able to reach and recover the victim.

The worker’s identity has not yet been released, but Martin Asphalt confirmed the victim was an employee.

Officials monitored air quality into the evening but said there was no danger to nearby residents. Recovery operations have since been completed.

A spokesperson for the company called the incident a tragedy and said safety protocols were immediately activated. The company also confirmed it has launched an internal review and is cooperating with investigators.

“At this time, the cause of the incident has not been determined,” the company said, adding that it would be inappropriate to speculate before a full investigation is complete.

The Pasadena Fire Marshal’s Office is now leading the investigation into what caused the tank to rupture.

“Our deepest sympathies are with the employee’s family,” the company said in a statement. “We are focused on supporting those affected during this incredibly difficult time.”
