What began as a competitive track meet ended in heartbreak after a young college athlete suddenly collapsed during a championship event.
Graycen Vargo, a long-distance runner for Texas A&M–Texarkana, died Friday after suffering a medical emergency during the Red River Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships in New Orleans. The event was hosted by Xavier University when the shocking moment unfolded.
According to the university, Vargo—who was from Dallas—collapsed during the competition and received immediate medical attention at the scene before being rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite efforts to save him, he later passed away. Officials have not released an exact cause of death.
The sudden loss has left the entire campus community reeling.
“Our thoughts are with Graycen’s family, teammates, and friends as they deal with this unimaginable loss,” said university president Dr. Ross Alexander. “Graycen was a respected member of the student body and a beloved member of the cross country and track and field teams. His presence will be greatly missed.”
Athletic director Ryan Wall also shared a heartfelt message, calling the loss devastating and extending prayers to everyone who knew him.
Vargo was a junior studying computer science and had recently joined the program after transferring from Jacksonville College. Even in his short time at the school, he made a strong impact.
He was recently honored with the Eagle Excellence Award in cross country—an achievement given to student-athletes who stand out not just in competition, but in character, academics, and their contributions to the community.
Now, instead of celebrating a championship weekend, teammates and classmates are mourning the sudden loss of someone they say meant so much to their program.
The university has made counseling services available as students and staff try to process the tragedy.
