Talk about a nightmare you can’t swallow.
A man in China is making headlines after doctors discovered he had been living with a metal chopstick lodged in his throat for a staggering eight years — all because of a drunken dinner gone horribly wrong.
The patient, identified only as Mr. Wang, reportedly swallowed the five-inch utensil back in 2018 while intoxicated. Shockingly, he initially sought medical help but refused surgery, unwilling to have doctors cut open his neck — and instead chose to live with the bizarre and dangerous situation.
For nearly a decade, Wang carried on with the foreign object stuck inside him, enduring ongoing discomfort. But in recent weeks, the pain became impossible to ignore, with worsening symptoms that made it difficult for him to even swallow.
That’s when he finally checked into Dalian Municipal Central Hospital in northeastern China, where stunned doctors could hardly believe what they were hearing.
“He told us a chopstick was trapped in his throat,” said Dr. Huang Weipeng. “I thought it just happened — but he said it was from eight years ago.”
Surgeons were able to remove the 12-centimeter metal chopstick using a minimally invasive procedure through his mouth, avoiding the need for major surgery. Even more unbelievable — despite years inside his body, Wang’s vocal cords and surrounding tissue were not seriously damaged.
After the successful operation, Wang was discharged within days and is expected to make a full recovery.
Doctors called the case extremely rare — and a stark reminder that sometimes, what you ignore doesn’t just go away.
