Tree Trimmer Crushed to Death in Freak Palm Tree Accident

A routine tree-trimming job turned deadly in an instant when a massive bundle of palm fronds came crashing down on a worker high above the ground in Arizona.

Authorities say the horrifying incident unfolded the morning of April 12 near Mill Avenue and Apache Boulevard in Tempe, where first responders rushed to the scene after receiving reports of a worker trapped in a tree.

According to police, the man—later identified as Flavio Sesmas Maya, 57—was elevated while working on a palm tree when disaster struck. A heavy section of dead fronds, known in the industry as a “palm skirt,” suddenly broke loose and slammed down on him.

Fire crews scrambled to rescue Maya, quickly securing the area as a ladder team worked to reach him. Specialized Technical Rescue Team personnel helped remove the debris and carefully lower him to the ground.

But despite the rapid response, Maya could not be saved. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other injuries were reported.

The shocking tragedy is now under investigation, as experts warn that palm trees—common across the Southwest—can quickly turn deadly under the wrong conditions.

Carter Allen, a local tree service owner who was working nearby days before the incident, said the danger is often underestimated.

“These trees can carry thousands of pounds of dead fronds,” he explained. “When they come loose, that weight drops fast—and if you’re attached to the tree, it can be catastrophic.”

Allen added that older palms with years of growth pose the greatest risk, and said using lift equipment from the outside is often the safest method to avoid being directly beneath unstable debris.

State workplace safety officials have confirmed they are now investigating what went wrong in the fatal accident, as questions swirl over whether more could have been done to prevent the devastating collapse.

What started as just another day on the job ended in a split-second disaster—one that highlights the hidden dangers of a profession many don’t think twice about.
