Shocking Video Shows Train Clipping School Bus Full of Kids

A routine school ride turned into a heart-stopping nightmare in Florida after a bus driver allegedly ignored a train crossing — and seconds later, disaster nearly struck.

Authorities say 67-year-old Yvonne Hampton is now facing serious charges after a shocking incident in Sumter County that left dozens of children screaming in panic when a train clipped the back of their school bus.

According to investigators, Hampton drove straight onto the railroad tracks on Thursday — despite reportedly saying she was “not gonna stop for no train.” Moments later, a fast-moving train slammed into the rear corner of the bus carrying 29 children and two adults.

Miraculously, no one was physically hurt.

But inside the bus, it was pure chaos.

A viral video circulating online shows terrified kids crying and screaming as the train barrels past just inches behind them — a split-second moment officials say could have ended in tragedy.

“A matter of inches is the difference here,” Sumter County School District Superintendent Logan Brown said. “This could have been catastrophic.”

Witness Christina Armstrong said she watched the horrifying scene unfold in Bushnell, about 50 miles outside Orlando.

“The bus stopped, then started going again,” she recalled. “It didn’t move far enough. I just wanted to cry. I started praying right away.”

One student described the moment bluntly: “I was terrified. All I could see was the train hitting the bus.”

Authorities moved quickly after the incident. Hampton was fired the same day and later hit with 29 counts of felony child neglect, along with a charge for failing to stop at a railroad crossing. She is currently being held without bond.

Officials credited the train conductor with preventing a far worse outcome, calling his actions heroic as he tried to slow the train.

In the aftermath, the school district has already scrapped the dangerous crossing from its bus routes and launched a review of its hiring and safety procedures.

For parents, though, the close call is a chilling reminder of how quickly things can go wrong — and how narrowly this one was avoided.

  1. “According to investigators, Hampton drove straight onto the railroad tracks on Thursday — despite reportedly saying she was “not gonna stop for no train.”

What is the function of the word “despite” in this sentence? A driver would STOP the bus, DESPITE saying, “not gonna stop for no train.”

Also, a DRIVER drives the train. The conductor is a crew member. If a conductor is driving a train, something has gone very wrong.

  2. We had an incident in Cary/Fox River Grove IL where a sub was driving a bus she was not acquainted with, it was longer than her usual bus. The result was 7 students killed.
That was a group fault, driver, bus size, crossing condition, and route. Not enough room for the longer bus to totally CLEAR the crossing. It has been changed, but the tragedy remains, many years later.
