What started as a night of classic rock and roaring crowds quickly spiraled into a terrifying medical emergency — and ultimately tragedy — at a Moda Center concert packed with fans of Bruce Springsteen.
A Portland couple suddenly found themselves at the center of a frantic, life-or-death situation when a man sitting just rows ahead of them collapsed mid-show Friday night.
Joshua Roark, a cardiologist, and his wife Jennifer, a seasoned former nurse practitioner, were in the crowd when they noticed something was seriously wrong.
“I saw him lean over,” Joshua recalled. “His friend was trying to wake him up — asking if he was okay.”
Within seconds, the couple realized the man had no pulse.
“Ok, this guy’s dead,” Jennifer remembered thinking.
Without hesitation, they sprang into action — right there between tightly packed concert seats — beginning CPR as music blared and lights stayed dim.
But what followed, they say, was pure chaos.
“It was probably the worst place imaginable for a medical emergency,” Jennifer said. “It was loud, dark, and cramped.”
As panic spread through nearby rows, the couple struggled to coordinate help. Joshua attempted to take charge, but with dozens of bystanders shouting and scrambling, it became a confusing, high-stakes scene.
Still, they kept going — performing chest compressions for what witnesses estimate was nearly 15 minutes.
At one point, an automated defibrillator was brought in, but even using it proved difficult due to the tight quarters.
“You’re supposed to have someone leading in these situations,” Jennifer explained. “But everything just felt out of control.”
Shockingly, the concert continued uninterrupted. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band reportedly had no idea what was unfolding in the crowd behind the stage.
Eventually, first responders arrived, but even removing the man proved to be a struggle. With no room to lift him, rescuers had to slide his body across the floor and down the stairs before getting him to the lobby.
The couple stayed with him as firefighters took over, attaching an automatic chest compression device in a desperate attempt to revive him.
Joshua later admitted the signs were grim.
“He had erratic electrical activity, but no pulse,” he said. “That’s not a good sign.”
By Monday, the heartbreaking outcome was confirmed: the man did not survive despite extensive efforts in the ambulance and at the hospital.
What should have been a night of music and memories instead ended in tragedy — and for those who witnessed it, a haunting reminder of how quickly everything can change.

Listening to the gravel voice communist is fatal.
I went to a Springsteen concert in DC many years ago and it was the worst concert I have ever been to. We actually left the concert halfway through and gave our tickets to someone outside in the parking lot. He was a Marxist scumbag then and is a Marxist scumbag now.
To Anonymous: You nailed it!
The commie music kills it. ICE should deport him.
You sound like the SCUM of the earth supporters!
