Man Crushed to Death While Moving Plywood in Horrifying Workplace Accident

A tragic workplace accident has claimed the life of a 28-year-old Massachusetts man at a millwork studio in Avon.

Authorities identified the victim as David Morais of West Roxbury, who was fatally injured while moving a stack of plywood at Materia Millwork on Tuesday, September 23, just before 3 p.m. Local police and fire crews rushed to the scene after receiving reports of a “fatal industrial accident,” but Morais was pronounced dead inside the business.

The Massachusetts State Police, OSHA, and the state medical examiner’s office have all joined the investigation to determine how the incident occurred.

In a heartfelt statement on social media, Materia Millwork described Morais as far more than an employee. “David was more than a valued member of our team. He was a friend, a craftsman, and someone we were lucky to know. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” the company wrote, adding that safety remains their top priority.

The sudden loss has left the community shaken, with friends and colleagues remembering Morais not just for his skill, but for the warmth and dedication he brought to his work.

RIP

  1. Unbanded stacks can slide being very dangerous. Ratchet straps might have prevented injury. His lift may not have had a heavy industrial strength shield . God bless his family that is now without.

  2. Many industrial accidents could be prevented by a bit of thought beforehand. It’s a shame that someone died, and a bigger shame that this accident was permitted to happen at all. Sometimes, “saving time” is not worth it.
    Condolences to the family.
