Hoda Kotb Breaks Down on Her Final Day at ‘Today’ (Video)

Hoda Kotb, a beloved fixture of American morning television, bid an emotional farewell on Friday, wrapping up a remarkable 26-year career at NBC.

Her departure marked the end of an era for Today, a program where Kotb brought warmth, relatability, and a steady hand to millions of viewers. At 60, she has chosen to “turn the page,” prioritizing her young daughters and personal ventures.

“It’s not just the end of a job,” Kotb said tearfully on air. “It’s the close of a chapter of love, growth, and family.”

Friday’s farewell episode was a poignant tribute. The Today studio, usually abuzz with lighthearted chatter, was a tapestry of emotions. Co-host Savannah Guthrie, visibly moved, told viewers, “Hoda, I love you deeply. Whether or not you’re sitting next to me, you’ll always be by my side.”

Kotb’s co-workers presented a video montage highlighting her career milestones, capped with a surprise message from Oprah Winfrey. The studio erupted in applause as Kotb’s daughters, Haley, 7, and Hope, 5, appeared on set holding handmade signs that read, “We love you, Mommy!”

Al Roker, who recently battled serious illness, recounted Kotb’s unwavering support during his darkest days. “She’s the kind of person who shows up—every single day. She was there for me, not just as a colleague but as a friend. People even thought she was my doctor!”

Roker’s anecdote drew laughter through the tears, a hallmark of Kotb’s time on Today.

Kotb and Guthrie’s friendship blossomed through the years, with their camaraderie becoming a cornerstone of Today’s success. The two bonded during turbulent times, such as NBC’s firing of Matt Lauer in 2017, when they became the first all-female anchor team in the show’s history.

Their chemistry translated into heartfelt moments on air. In December, Guthrie gave Kotb a Secret Santa gift: a framed quote reading, “May you find the light to guide you home.” A teary Kotb called it “one of the most beautiful gifts I’ve ever received.”

Kotb’s decision to leave wasn’t made lightly. “At 60, I realized it’s time to try something new,” she explained in her September announcement. “My daughters deserve more of my time.”

But this isn’t the last viewers will see of her. Kotb plans to launch a wellness app and company, host a podcast, and continue contributing exclusive NBC interviews, including coverage of the next two Olympics.

“I’ve been blessed beyond measure,” she said. “This isn’t goodbye forever; it’s goodbye for now.”

Outside Rockefeller Plaza, devoted fans braved the cold, holding banners like “Hoda Forever!” and “Thank You for the Memories.” One woman, who traveled from Iowa, said, “Hoda was the reason I woke up every morning. Her kindness shines through the screen.”

As the final hour of the broadcast neared its end, Guthrie summed up the sentiments of the Today family and viewers alike: “Don’t be sad it’s over; be glad it happened.”

With one last tearful embrace, Hoda Kotb left the set, surrounded by her Today family and the love of a grateful nation.
