The Doors Legend Suffers Heartbreaking Loss

The Doors guitarist Robby Krieger is mourning a devastating personal loss after his wife of more than five decades died just weeks before the couple would have celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary.

Lynn Ann Veres, who inspired one of the legendary rock band’s biggest hits, died peacefully on October 29 at age 79. Krieger, 80, shared the heartbreaking news in an emotional Instagram statement on November 3, revealing that he and their son, Waylon, were by her side during her final moments.

“After more than fifty years of love and marriage, my wife Lynn Ann Veres passed away peacefully,” the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer wrote.

“Waylon and I were with her until the end. Will miss her so much,” he added, asking fans to keep the family in their thoughts and prayers.

The announcement included a vintage black-and-white photograph of Veres, offering fans a glimpse of the woman who played an unforgettable role in Krieger’s life and music. Her official cause of death has not been disclosed, although reports indicate she had been battling a longtime illness.

The couple married on Christmas Day in 1972, but their love story began amid the wild and unpredictable world of 1960s rock and roll. In a surprising twist, Veres was initially romantically involved with Krieger’s bandmate, Jim Morrison.

During a 2021 interview with People, Krieger recalled how Veres had traveled to Los Angeles to see Morrison, only to discover that the Doors frontman’s longtime girlfriend, Pamela Courson, was already there. The awkward encounter left Veres furious with Morrison, and Krieger eventually grew closer to her.

What began as an unexpected romance turned into one of rock music’s enduring marriages.

Veres also became the inspiration behind The Doors’ 1971 hit “Love Her Madly,” which Krieger wrote during their relationship. The song, inspired in part by the couple’s arguments and reconciliations, climbed to No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remains one of the band’s most recognizable recordings.

Decades later, Krieger made his devotion clear in his 2021 memoir, Set the Night on Fire, which he dedicated to his wife. He described her spirited personality and credited her with allowing him to be himself throughout their years together.

“She’s the only person I’ve ever met who lets me be me,” he wrote. “And that’s why I’ll always love her.”

Krieger and drummer John Densmore are the two surviving members of The Doors. Morrison died in 1971 at age 27, while keyboardist Ray Manzarek died in 2013 at 74.

Now, after more than half a century together, Krieger faces life without the woman who stood beside him through the heights of rock stardom and inspired a song that generations of fans continue to love.
