A former Jeopardy! champion who once walked away with more than $44,000 in winnings is now sitting behind bars without bond, facing a new wave of serious criminal charges just months after pleading guilty in a separate secret-camera scandal.
Philip Joseph “Joey” DeSena, 44, a two-time winner of the popular game show, was arrested in Raleigh, North Carolina, on October 23 and charged with 10 felony counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor.
According to court records, investigators allege DeSena possessed and duplicated digital files containing child sexual abuse material. Arrest warrants issued October 22 identify November 19, 2025, as the date of the alleged offenses.
DeSena appeared before a Wake County judge on Monday, October 26, but was denied bond, leaving the former television contestant in custody as his latest legal troubles unfold. His next court appearance is scheduled for November 16.
The arrest marks another dramatic turn for DeSena, whose previous encounter with the law had already raised troubling questions about his conduct.
In December 2025, the Raleigh resident was arrested on two felony counts of secret peeping after authorities accused him of secretly placing cameras inside a bedroom and bathroom at a rental property in North Carolina.
Investigators alleged the cameras were intended to capture images of another person without that individual’s knowledge or consent. The incident reportedly occurred on October 10, 2025, and DeSena later surrendered to authorities.
He initially secured his release after posting a $5,000 bond. However, the case ultimately resulted in a guilty plea on July 27, 2026, followed by a sentence of five years of supervised probation.
As part of that sentence, DeSena was ordered to complete 100 hours of community service and undergo a mental health assessment. He was not required to register as a sex offender under the terms of his plea agreement.
His latest arrest came while he was still serving that probation sentence, adding another serious complication to an already troubled legal history.
Court records place the alleged offenses in the new case just weeks after the secret-peeping incident, although authorities have not publicly established a connection between the two investigations.
The allegations stand in stark contrast to DeSena’s earlier appearance on national television, where he became a familiar face to Jeopardy! viewers in November 2024.
A development engineer from Raleigh, DeSena won two consecutive games and collected $44,698 in prize money. His success earned him another opportunity to compete in the show’s Winter 2025 Champions Wildcard tournament, where he advanced to the semifinals.
What began as a memorable television achievement has since been overshadowed by a criminal conviction and a second arrest in less than a year.
DeSena now faces 10 new felony charges, with his next court appearance expected to determine the next steps in the case. The latest allegations remain unproven, and he is presumed innocent of those charges unless proven guilty.
