Cowboys Legend Held at Gunpoint in Shocking Police Video

Former Dallas Cowboys superstar Dez Bryant found himself face down on the pavement with his hands cuffed behind his back as an armed police officer stood over him during a frightening confrontation outside a Texas restaurant.

The dramatic encounter, captured in video released Monday, October 26, unfolded in Southlake, Texas, on Sunday afternoon after what Bryant described as a heated dispute with two men over their driving.

The 37-year-old former NFL star says the situation quickly spiraled out of control, leaving him handcuffed at gunpoint while his young daughters witnessed the disturbing scene.

What began as an argument over reckless driving ultimately ended with Bryant receiving an assault citation, despite his insistence that he was responding to a threat against his safety.

According to Bryant, the trouble started when two drivers allegedly cut him off and behaved recklessly on a nearby roadway. All three eventually ended up in the parking lot of the same restaurant, where the former wide receiver confronted the men about their driving.

Bryant acknowledged that the conversation became heated, with both sides exchanging angry words. He claims one of the men then suggested he might shoot him, prompting an equally forceful response from the former football star.

Bryant admitted warning the man that if he pulled a gun, he had better be prepared to use it. However, he confirmed that the individual never actually displayed a firearm.

Instead, the man allegedly pulled out his cellphone and began recording the confrontation, further escalating tensions.

Bryant told OutKick that he became frustrated with being filmed and knocked the phone out of the man’s hand. The individual then threatened to call police, something Bryant said he welcomed because he believed officers would investigate the alleged shooting threat.

But when police arrived, the situation took another alarming turn.

Video provided to OutKick shows Bryant lying face down in the parking lot with his hands restrained behind his back as an officer points a firearm in his direction. Two other men can also be seen on the ground in handcuffs.

Bryant said his girlfriend arrived with their two daughters, who witnessed their father being detained.

The former Cowboys standout described seeing his children during the encounter as one of the most upsetting parts of the ordeal. He said he worried about what they would think while watching their father on the ground with a police officer’s weapon pointed toward him.

Southlake police have since released a statement explaining why officers approached the confrontation with their firearms drawn.

According to the department, officers responded to reports of a fight involving several people in a retail parking lot shortly before 1 p.m. Sunday. Multiple callers also reported the possibility that someone involved had a weapon.

Police said those reports prompted officers to draw their firearms as a precaution while securing the scene.

Authorities confirmed that several individuals were temporarily detained during the investigation, but no firearms were recovered.

Investigators determined that the confrontation began following a traffic dispute near Kimball Avenue before continuing into the restaurant parking lot.

Bryant was ultimately issued a citation for assault by contact, a Class C misdemeanor under Texas law, and released without being arrested.

The citation, reviewed by OutKick, requires him to appear in Southlake Municipal Court on or before November 20. The offense generally carries a maximum fine of $500.

Despite being allowed to leave, Bryant remains furious about how the situation was handled.

He claims officers focused heavily on cellphone footage recorded by one of the other men without adequately investigating the events that preceded the confrontation. Bryant said he wanted authorities to examine available surveillance footage and consider his allegation that he had been threatened.

He also alleged that an officer encouraged him to be the bigger person, a suggestion Bryant found frustrating given his account of the incident.

Bryant maintains that he believed he was protecting himself, although authorities have not publicly confirmed his allegation that the other man threatened to shoot him. His claim of self-defense has not been resolved in court.

The confrontation has attracted widespread attention because of Bryant’s status as one of the most recognizable players in Dallas Cowboys history.

During eight seasons with the Cowboys, Bryant became a fan favorite known for his explosive catches, fiery personality and competitive spirit. He earned three Pro Bowl selections and recorded 531 receptions for 7,459 yards and 73 touchdowns with Dallas before later finishing his NFL career with the Baltimore Ravens in 2020.

Now, instead of making headlines for his football accomplishments, Bryant is facing questions about a parking lot confrontation that ended with police drawing their weapons.

The former receiver has emphasized that he has maintained positive relationships with Southlake police officers in the past and does not want this incident to overshadow those experiences.

Still, he believes the encounter deserves closer scrutiny, particularly because his children were present to witness part of it.

Bryant says his reputation means everything to him and is calling for fairness, respect and a thorough examination of what happened.

For now, the former NFL star faces a misdemeanor citation, with his first opportunity to formally contest the allegation approaching in November.
