Queen Camilla may be accustomed to royal pressure today, but her first meeting with Prince William reportedly left her so nervous that she emerged from the encounter declaring she needed a stiff drink.
The surprising admission came during a delicate family introduction in June 1998, less than a year after Princess Diana’s death. At the time, Camilla Parker Bowles was still widely criticized over her relationship with then-Prince Charles, and meeting his teenage son was anything but an ordinary introduction.
According to royal biographer Penny Junor, Camilla was deeply anxious about coming face-to-face with William, who was just days away from his 16th birthday. She understood that her relationship with Charles remained a painful subject for his children, particularly following their mother’s death.
The encounter unfolded at York House, part of London’s St. James’s Palace, where Charles was living. William was returning from Eton College when plans took an unexpected turn.
Camilla reportedly offered to leave rather than risk an uncomfortable confrontation. Charles, however, dismissed the idea and encouraged her to stay.
William wasn’t expected until 7 p.m., but he arrived around 3:30 p.m., catching everyone off guard and leaving Camilla with little time to prepare herself.
Charles brought Camilla upstairs to meet his son, setting the stage for a conversation that had been years in the making.
After approximately 30 minutes, Camilla emerged with a memorable declaration.
“I need a gin and tonic!” she reportedly exclaimed.
Junor recounted the episode in her biography of Camilla, explaining that the remark was made jokingly after what turned out to be a successful introduction. Despite her nerves, William had reportedly been friendly, and the two managed to navigate the uncomfortable circumstances.
Still, the significance of their meeting was difficult to ignore.
Charles and Diana’s marriage had collapsed amid revelations about his relationship with Camilla, and the couple finalized their divorce in 1996. Diana’s death in a Paris car crash the following year left William and his younger brother, Prince Harry, grieving under extraordinary public scrutiny.
Camilla was well aware that she occupied a complicated position in their father’s life and reportedly had no intention of trying to replace their mother.
The introduction quickly became a major royal story after details reached the British press. In July 1998, palace officials confirmed that William and Camilla had met, describing the circumstances as a private family matter.
The meeting also marked an important turning point in Charles’ efforts to bring Camilla more openly into his family life. William and Camilla reportedly met again for lunch and tea in the weeks that followed, gradually establishing a relationship without forcing an immediate sense of closeness.
Seven years later, Charles and Camilla married in April 2005, officially making her William and Harry’s stepmother.
Their relationship continued to evolve as the royal family faced new challenges. When Charles and William’s wife, Catherine, Princess of Wales, both underwent cancer treatment in 2024, Camilla and William assumed additional public responsibilities during a difficult period for the monarchy.
The two have since appeared together at numerous royal engagements, although the full nature of their private relationship remains largely out of public view.
Looking back, the now-famous gin-and-tonic remark offers a revealing glimpse into a moment when Camilla was far from the confident royal figure the public recognizes today.
Before becoming Queen, she was a nervous woman facing an extraordinary personal challenge: meeting the teenage son of the man she loved, knowing that her presence carried painful memories of his parents’ marriage.
And after surviving that first half-hour conversation, she apparently felt she had earned herself a drink.
