A magical night at Disneyland took a wild turn Friday when a sudden thunderstorm unleashed heavy rain, turning parts of the world-famous theme park into rivers and sending stunned visitors scrambling for higher ground.
What began as an ordinary evening at the Anaheim, California, attraction quickly became a soaking nightmare on October 23, as floodwaters swallowed sections of popular walkways, rides temporarily shut down and families rushed to escape the downpour.
Within minutes, some areas of Frontierland were covered in ankle-deep water, leaving guests stepping onto benches, navigating raised garden edges and searching desperately for somewhere dry.
Videos shared on social media captured the extraordinary scenes near Frontierland’s Pioneer Mercantile, where visitors struggled through standing water while Disneyland employees worked to clear overwhelmed drains.

The flooding wasn’t limited to one corner of the park. Water also accumulated in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and around the Haunted Mansion, while sections of Fantasyland were transformed into fast-moving streams.
Between Sleeping Beauty Castle and the Matterhorn Bobsleds, rainwater rushed along pedestrian pathways. Elsewhere, water cascaded from overflowing outdoor canopies, creating unexpected waterfalls over seating areas.
For guests who arrived expecting a relaxing evening of Disney magic, the weather was anything but magical.
One frustrated visitor complained online that the forecast hadn’t called for rain and that they had arrived without a hoodie or umbrella. Their shoes and clothes were completely soaked by the time the storm passed.
Another parkgoer joked that Disneyland’s famous Rivers of America attraction had apparently expanded into Frontierland.
Even the resort’s transportation areas weren’t spared. Standing water reportedly collected near the Mickey & Friends and Pixar Pals parking tram terminals, adding another obstacle for families trying to make their way back to their vehicles.
The sudden storm also disrupted attractions across Disneyland and neighboring Disney California Adventure. More than 20 rides were reportedly listed as temporarily closed around 7:30 p.m., including Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, the Matterhorn Bobsleds, Radiator Springs Racers and the Incredicoaster.
Disneyland confirmed that some areas were temporarily closed because of the severe weather, describing such precautions as standard procedure during heavy rainfall.
The National Weather Service had issued a flood advisory for northeastern Orange County at 6:35 p.m., warning that thunderstorms could trigger flooding in low-lying areas and locations with poor drainage. By 7:10 p.m., forecasters reported that as much as an inch of rain had fallen in parts of the affected region.
Addison Zegan, who runs the Disneylanders social media account, told the Los Angeles Times that he heard thunder and saw lightning around 7 p.m. before witnessing unusually intense rainfall. He described confused visitors sheltering from the storm as employees worked to keep people safe.
Although the heaviest weather moved through in less than an hour, it left behind flooded pathways, soaked visitors and a string of disrupted attractions.
For many guests, the evening became a Disneyland experience they never expected. Instead of enjoying another magical night at the Happiest Place on Earth, they found themselves caught in a real-life water adventure — and this time, nobody had lined up for the ride.
