Famous Bear from Hollywood Kills Trainer in Stunt Gone Horribly Wrong

A massive grizzly bear that appeared in a hit Hollywood comedy starring Will Ferrell became the center of a real-life tragedy just weeks after the movie reached theaters, when a routine wrestling stunt turned deadly in a matter of seconds.

Rocky, a 700-pound, 7½-foot-tall grizzly, was considered one of Hollywood’s most experienced performing bears. But on April 22, 2008, the five-year-old animal fatally attacked 39-year-old stuntman and animal trainer Stephan Miller during the filming of a promotional video at a California wildlife training facility.

The horrifying incident unfolded at Predators in Action, a company near Big Bear Lake that supplied trained animals for major Hollywood productions. Miller, an experienced animal handler and father of two, was working alongside his cousin, company owner Randy Miller, when the seemingly controlled demonstration took an unexpected turn.

Rocky had recently appeared as Dewey the Killer Bear in the 2008 basketball comedy Semi-Pro, which featured Ferrell’s character, Jackie Moon, participating in an outrageous bear-wrestling stunt. Although the scene appeared dangerous, Ferrell never actually wrestled the live animal. A professional stunt double handled the close-contact sequences while trainers carefully controlled Rocky’s movements.

The promotional shoot was intended to recreate a similarly playful wrestling demonstration. According to accounts later explored in a National Geographic documentary, Rocky began performing his trained wrestling behavior before Stephan Miller was properly positioned to defend himself.

What happened next left even the experienced handlers stunned.

Rocky suddenly bit Miller in the neck, causing a fatal injury. Randy Miller and other handlers desperately intervened, using emergency measures, including pepper spray, to bring the enormous animal under control.

Although the bear was restrained within seconds, the damage had already been done. Emergency responders rushed to the facility, but Stephan could not be revived.

Speaking to The Associated Press afterward, a devastated Randy Miller struggled to understand how an animal he considered affectionate and well-trained could have been involved in such a tragedy.

“It happened so fast,” he recalled, explaining that the handlers had acted immediately but could not save his cousin.

The death was especially shocking because Rocky had spent years learning to perform controlled wrestling movements alongside human handlers. He was accustomed to following commands and had successfully completed his Hollywood appearance without incident.

Yet the tragedy demonstrated how even a familiar routine can become dangerous when dealing with a wild animal of extraordinary strength.

The incident also left the entertainment industry facing uncomfortable questions about the use of large predators in movies and television.

Animal welfare organizations, including PETA, argued that Rocky should not be euthanized for behaving like a wild animal. Others questioned whether such powerful creatures should be required to perform physical stunts with humans at all.

Authorities ultimately treated Miller’s death as an accident, and Rocky was spared euthanasia. However, the bear faced significant restrictions that prevented him from returning to his former Hollywood career in California. Efforts to have those restrictions lifted were unsuccessful.

The tragedy later became the subject of the National Geographic documentary Grizzly Face to Face: Hollywood Bear Tragedy, which examined the fatal incident, the complicated relationship between trainers and wild animals, and the consequences for Rocky.

Years later, the bear’s story took another turn.

On June 4, 2022, Rocky was transferred to Lions Tigers & Bears, an accredited animal sanctuary in Alpine, California, where he was given a permanent retirement home.

According to the sanctuary, Rocky had previously been kept in a boarding facility that offered far less space than an animal of his size needed. His new surroundings provided a larger habitat, opportunities to explore, and the freedom to behave more naturally.

Sanctuary staff reported that Rocky gradually adjusted to his new environment, developing a fondness for watermelon, grapes, and even the smell of peppermint.

The former Hollywood star’s retirement marked the final chapter of a remarkable entertainment career overshadowed by tragedy.

For Stephan Miller’s family, however, the events of April 22, 2008, left a permanent loss and a painful reminder of the risks faced by those who work closely with powerful wild animals.

What audiences had watched as a carefully staged moment of Hollywood comedy became a devastating reality when the cameras were rolling again.
