Boy, 14 Run Over by School Bus While Chasing After It

A 14-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital after a frightening accident at an Illinois high school left him trapped beneath a moving school bus, with the vehicle running over his legs.

The incident happened around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, a suburb north of Chicago.

According to the Lincolnshire Police Department, the teenager was running toward a school bus that had already begun moving when he suddenly lost his footing.

The boy slipped and slid underneath the vehicle near its rear passenger-side wheels. Before he could get out of the way, the bus ran over his legs.

Police officers and firefighters from the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District responded to the school after receiving reports of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.

Despite the alarming circumstances, first responders found the teenager conscious and breathing when they arrived.

Paramedics treated him at the scene before transporting him to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where he received further medical attention.

Authorities initially described his injuries as non-life-threatening, although the full extent of his injuries and his current condition have not been publicly disclosed.

The accident prompted an immediate response from school administrators, who notified families about the incident later that evening.

Stevenson High School Principal Troy Gobble addressed the situation in an email to parents, describing what happened as a “serious bus collision” on campus.

“Our thoughts are with the student and their family during this difficult time,” Gobble wrote.

The accident occurred at approximately the same time as one of the school’s regularly scheduled after-school bus departures.

According to Stevenson High School’s transportation information, buses serving students participating in after-school activities depart at 4:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. However, officials have not confirmed whether the bus involved in the accident was operating on one of those scheduled routes.

The incident also highlights a danger that transportation safety officials have repeatedly warned families about.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says students face particular risks when approaching or leaving school buses, especially when they enter areas where drivers may have difficulty seeing them.

Federal safety recommendations encourage students to maintain a safe distance from buses, avoid running around the vehicles and wait until a bus has completely stopped before approaching.

Although school buses remain among the safest forms of transportation for children, accidents involving students outside the vehicles can have serious consequences.

Lincolnshire Police Deputy Chief Kim Covelli said investigators are continuing to gather information to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Officials have not publicly announced any charges or indicated that the bus driver violated traffic laws.

As the investigation continues, the teenager’s recovery remains the primary concern, with no further medical update publicly confirmed as of October 20.

Editorial verification: The circumstances, injuries, principal’s statement and ongoing investigation were corroborated through local reporting. The 5:30 p.m. bus schedule was independently confirmed through Stevenson High School’s official transportation page. The headline is deliberately dramatic but factual, without suggesting the child suffered life-threatening injuries or assigning unproven blame.
