Jonathan Taylor Thomas Arrested After Shocking Altercation

Former child star Jonathan Taylor Thomas is facing possible criminal charges after allegedly kicking a sheriff’s deputy during a late-night traffic stop in California, adding an unexpected controversy to the life of one of Hollywood’s biggest 1990s teen heartthrobs.

The 45-year-old actor, best known for playing Randy Taylor on the hit sitcom Home Improvement, was taken into custody September 21 after authorities accused him of interfering with a suspected drunk-driving investigation.

Now, nearly a month later, questions are growing about what happened during the confrontation after the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department declined to release body-camera and dashboard-camera footage of the encounter.

According to the department, the incident began around 12:30 a.m. in Westlake Village, California, when deputies noticed a vehicle stopped at an intersection despite a green traffic light.

Officers approached the vehicle after observing that the driver appeared confused and possibly intoxicated.

Thomas, whose legal name is Jonathan Taylor Weiss, was sitting in the passenger seat.

As deputies conducted field sobriety tests on the driver, Thomas allegedly began repeatedly getting out of the vehicle and approaching officers.

Investigators claim the actor appeared intoxicated and continued interrupting their work despite instructions to remain out of the way.

The confrontation reportedly escalated when deputies attempted to detain him on suspicion of obstruction and public intoxication.

According to the sheriff’s department, Thomas kicked one deputy in the stomach while officers were trying to take him into custody.

He was subsequently arrested and booked at the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station.

The driver was separately arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Thomas remained in custody for approximately 34 hours before being released the following day.

Although he was initially arrested, booking records later reclassified the incident as a detention, and no formal criminal charges had been filed against him at the time.

But the matter is not necessarily over.

NBC Los Angeles reported October 1 that detectives had submitted the case to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office for review.

Prosecutors were considering possible charges involving public intoxication and felony battery on a peace officer, according to law enforcement sources cited by the station.

The district attorney’s office has not publicly announced a final charging decision.

Meanwhile, another development has brought renewed attention to the incident.

RadarOnline reported that it requested body-camera and dashboard-camera recordings from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department under California’s public records law.

The department denied the request, citing the ongoing criminal investigation and concerns that releasing the material could interfere with investigators’ work or affect witness safety.

The decision means the public has not been able to independently examine video of the alleged confrontation.

Although deputies have provided an account of what happened, the unreleased footage has not been independently reviewed by reporters.

The department’s decision to withhold the recordings does not establish that the allegations are true or false.

Thomas has not publicly provided a detailed account of the incident, and his representatives have not issued a substantive response to the allegations.

The controversy marks an unusual return to the headlines for an actor who largely disappeared from Hollywood after becoming one of television’s most recognizable young stars.

Thomas rose to fame in 1991 when he joined the cast of ABC’s Home Improvement, starring alongside Tim Allen, Patricia Richardson and Zachery Ty Bryan.

As Randy Taylor, the quick-witted middle son of Tim and Jill Taylor, Thomas became a fan favorite and appeared on countless teen magazine covers.

The sitcom became one of America’s most successful television comedies during the 1990s, running for eight seasons.

Thomas also found success in movies, voicing young Simba in Disney’s 1994 animated blockbuster The Lion King.

His film credits included Tom and Huck, Man of the House, Wild America and the 1998 holiday comedy I’ll Be Home for Christmas.

Despite his enormous popularity, Thomas eventually stepped away from full-time acting to focus on his education.

He studied at Harvard University, spent time at the University of St Andrews in Scotland and later attended Columbia University.

The actor made occasional returns to television, including guest appearances alongside his former television father, Tim Allen, on Last Man Standing.

But for much of the past two decades, Thomas has maintained a remarkably private lifestyle, rarely attending Hollywood events or giving interviews.

That changed briefly in July 2026 when his former Home Improvement costar Patricia Richardson shared a photograph of the two together, delighting fans who had not seen the actor publicly in years.

Now, the former teen idol is attracting attention for an entirely different reason.

The allegations involving the sheriff’s deputy could carry serious consequences if prosecutors decide to file charges and obtain a conviction.

Under California law, the penalties for battery against a peace officer depend on the specific offense charged, whether an injury occurred and other circumstances surrounding the incident.

However, no court has determined that Thomas committed a crime, and he remains entitled to the presumption of innocence.

The case is still awaiting a publicly announced resolution from prosecutors.

For fans who remember Thomas as the charming teenager from Home Improvement, the allegations represent a surprising development in the life of a star who spent years avoiding the spotlight.

And with the reported video evidence remaining unavailable to the public, the full circumstances of the late-night confrontation have yet to emerge.
