A heartbreaking emergency recording has revealed new details about the final hours of Hollywood legend Diane Keaton, who died on October 11, 2025, at age 79 following a sudden decline in her health.
The Oscar-winning actress was rushed to a Los Angeles hospital after emergency crews responded to a medical call at her Brentwood home. Audio of the fire department dispatch, obtained by TMZ at the time, captured the urgent words “person down” as first responders were sent to the property.
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, paramedics arrived at approximately 8:08 a.m. and transported a patient to a nearby hospital. The patient was later identified as Keaton, whose death stunned Hollywood and millions of devoted fans.
Her family subsequently confirmed that she died from pneumonia. Her death certificate provided further details, identifying primary bacterial pneumonia as the cause and indicating that the illness had developed several days before her passing.
Although the dispatch recording captured the emergency response, it did not reveal precisely what happened inside Keaton’s home or who initially called for help.
The beloved actress had reportedly experienced a dramatic deterioration in her health during her final weeks, something that even several longtime friends had not fully understood.
A source close to Keaton told People that her condition had worsened unexpectedly, describing the situation as devastating for those who loved her.
Songwriter and close friend Carole Bayer Sager was among the last people to see Keaton before her death. She recalled visiting the actress just two or three weeks earlier and being shocked by her appearance.
“I saw her two or three weeks ago, and she was very thin,” Sager told People. “She had lost so much weight.”
Sager explained that Keaton had spent time in Palm Springs after her Los Angeles home sustained interior damage during the devastating California wildfires earlier that year.
The actress had temporarily relocated while the property was being cleaned, and Sager said she was startled by how much weight her friend had lost upon returning.
Despite her noticeably frail appearance, Keaton reportedly maintained the lively personality that made her one of Hollywood’s most recognizable stars.
Sager remembered her as someone who could brighten an entire room, constantly taking photographs and finding new ways to express her creativity.
Keaton had previously spoken publicly about personal health struggles, including her battle with bulimia earlier in life. However, there is no established evidence connecting that history to the pneumonia that caused her death.
Her passing prompted an outpouring of grief from Hollywood’s biggest names.
Robert De Niro, who worked with Keaton on several films, admitted he had been completely blindsided by the news.
“I am very sad to hear of Diane’s passing,” he said, adding that he had not expected to lose her so suddenly.
Bette Midler, who starred alongside Keaton in the 1996 comedy The First Wives Club, remembered her as a remarkable original whose humor and authenticity set her apart from other Hollywood stars.
Leonardo DiCaprio, who appeared with Keaton in Marvin’s Room, described her as “one of a kind. Brilliant, funny and unapologetically herself.”
Goldie Hawn also shared an emotional tribute, expressing disbelief that her longtime friend and former co-star was gone.
Keaton’s remarkable career spanned more than five decades. She became a household name through her performance in The Godfather before winning the Academy Award for Best Actress for Annie Hall in 1978.
She later captivated audiences in Father of the Bride, The First Wives Club, Something’s Gotta Give and numerous other beloved films. Her unmistakable fashion sense, dry humor and unconventional approach to Hollywood fame helped make her an enduring cultural icon.
Away from the spotlight, Keaton had high-profile relationships with Al Pacino, Warren Beatty and Woody Allen but never married. She became a mother later in life, adopting her daughter Dexter in 1996 and her son Duke in 2001.
Following her death, her family thanked fans for their overwhelming support and encouraged those wishing to honor her memory to contribute to local food banks or animal shelters, reflecting her longtime compassion for animals and people experiencing homelessness.
One year after her passing, the emergency recording remains a painful reminder of how unexpectedly the legendary actress’s life came to an end, leaving behind two children, generations of unforgettable performances and an extraordinary legacy in American cinema.
