Music Icon, 83, Suffers Comeback Setback After Bizarre Exit

Barry Manilow’s long-awaited return to Las Vegas has taken an unexpected turn after the legendary singer was forced to cut a concert short and cancel another performance, just months after undergoing surgery for lung cancer.

The 83-year-old entertainer, whose career has spanned more than five decades, was making his comeback at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino when a new bout of bronchitis disrupted what was supposed to be a celebratory weekend.

Manilow had returned to the resort’s International Theater on Thursday, October 8, following a six-week break from performing. His opening-night appearance was reportedly a success, with enthusiastic fans welcoming the singer back to the stage. However, the excitement was short-lived.

During Friday night’s concert, Manilow unexpectedly left the stage after performing only a couple of songs. His band reportedly continued playing for a time before an announcement informed the audience that the performance would not continue.

The sudden ending left concertgoers facing an unusual and disappointing conclusion to an evening they had anticipated for weeks. Some attendees later reported receiving emails from Ticketmaster indicating that refunds would be issued.

By Saturday, October 10, the situation had become clearer. Representatives for Manilow and the Westgate confirmed that the singer had developed bronchitis, forcing the cancellation of the remaining weekend performance.

“After a triumphant welcome-back concert on Thursday, Barry got hit with bronchitis and had to cancel his Friday and Saturday shows,” representatives said in a statement reported by Variety.

The illness has raised renewed concerns among fans because Manilow has already faced significant respiratory health challenges over the past year.

In December 2025, the Grammy-winning performer revealed that doctors had discovered stage 1 lung cancer after he experienced an unusually prolonged battle with bronchitis. He had been sick for six weeks before suffering another relapse that lasted five additional weeks.

Although he eventually recovered enough to return to performing, his physician ordered additional imaging to investigate his condition. The examination revealed a cancerous spot on his left lung that required surgery.

Manilow later underwent a lobectomy, a procedure in which surgeons remove a lobe of the lung. He subsequently revealed that the cancer had been caught early and that he did not require chemotherapy or radiation.

Despite the encouraging outcome, recovering from the operation presented challenges for someone whose livelihood depends on his ability to sing.

During a June interview with ABC News, Manilow admitted that his voice had changed following surgery and that he initially feared he might never sound the same again. He explained that returning to singing required patience as he worked to rebuild his vocal strength.

The experience was particularly difficult for an entertainer who has spent much of his life performing beloved songs such as “Mandy,” “Copacabana,” “Can’t Smile Without You,” and “I Write the Songs.”

In an earlier interview with PEOPLE, Manilow also reflected on how his cancer diagnosis had changed his outlook on life, forcing him to confront health concerns he had rarely considered during his decades in the spotlight.

Nevertheless, the singer remained determined to continue performing.

His return included a demanding summer schedule of 29 concerts in just 68 days, an ambitious undertaking for any performer, particularly one still recovering from major surgery.

By late August, however, the relentless pace appeared to have caught up with him.

Following his August 22 Las Vegas appearance, Manilow announced that he needed to step away from the stage temporarily because of vocal and technical difficulties. Several September performances were postponed as he focused on resting his voice.

At the time, he acknowledged that his team may have pushed too hard during the summer tour, even though the performances had gone well.

He assured fans that the break would be temporary and expressed confidence that he would return to Las Vegas in October feeling refreshed and ready to perform.

That optimism appeared justified when he stepped back into the spotlight on October 8. According to reports from the comeback concert, Manilow was in good spirits, joking with audience members and enjoying the enthusiastic reception.

His sudden illness the following evening, however, demonstrated how unpredictable his recovery and return to a demanding performance schedule could be.

Bronchitis causes inflammation of the airways and can produce coughing, fatigue, chest discomfort and breathing difficulties. While many cases resolve without serious complications, respiratory illnesses can be especially disruptive for professional singers because they affect breathing control and vocal endurance.

Manilow’s previous lung surgery adds another layer of concern, although representatives have not indicated that his latest illness is related to cancer or that the disease has returned.

There has also been no public confirmation that his current bronchitis will require a lengthy absence from performing.

Beyond his health struggles, Manilow has continued to maintain an active recording career. In June, he released his 33rd studio album, “What a Time,” featuring new material that reflects his enduring commitment to music.

His Las Vegas residency, “Barry Manilow — The Hits Come Home!,” has also become a major part of his legacy. The longtime headliner holds the record for the most performances at the Westgate’s International Theater, a venue with a history of hosting entertainment legends, including Elvis Presley.

The resort announced additional Manilow residency dates for 2027 in September, signaling plans to continue the successful partnership.

As of Sunday, October 11, his next scheduled performances remain listed for October 15 through October 17, although it is unclear whether his latest illness will affect those dates.

For fans who have followed Manilow’s remarkable career, the cancellations are another reminder of the physical challenges the beloved entertainer has faced while trying to return to the stage.

And while his latest setback has interrupted what should have been a triumphant comeback, Manilow has repeatedly made it clear that he is not ready to walk away from the music or the audiences who have supported him for more than half a century.
