A Texas family is mourning a 17-year-old high school senior who was killed during a late-night confrontation at the McDonald’s where he worked — on a night relatives say he was not even supposed to be there.
Reginald “RJ” Harrell was working Wednesday night at a McDonald’s in northwest Harris County when authorities say an altercation broke out between him and a 16-year-old coworker.
The confrontation escalated, and Harrell was stabbed, according to investigators.
Deputies responding to the restaurant in the 13300 block of Louetta Road found Harrell inside a restroom. Paramedics attempted lifesaving measures, but the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 16-year-old coworker remained at the restaurant and was detained by deputies, authorities said. He was later charged with murder and booked into the Harris County Juvenile Detention Center.
Because the suspect is a juvenile, authorities have not publicly released his name.
Investigators have not announced what sparked the confrontation, and a motive remained unclear as of Friday.
Harrell’s family said the loss has been especially difficult because the Cypress Creek High School senior had not originally been scheduled to work that night.
His mother, Denisha Dennis, said her son did not deserve what happened to him and called for justice.
“He was only 17,” she told local media while describing the heartbreak of no longer being able to hug or speak with her son.
Family members said Harrell was a senior in high school who hoped to become a welder after graduation. Those close to him remembered him as loving, cheerful and someone who was frequently smiling.
His sister, Kourtnee Dennis, said the family never imagined that when Harrell left home for work, it would be the final time they would see him.
Local investigators said Harrell and the other teenager were employees at the restaurant and were preparing to close the location around the time of the deadly confrontation.
Other employees reportedly tried to help Harrell before emergency crews arrived.
The McDonald’s remained temporarily closed Thursday as authorities processed the scene and employees dealt with the aftermath.
Restaurant owner-operator Michael Gutierrez said the business was devastated by what happened.
“We are saddened by this tragedy, and our hearts are with the victim’s loved ones and all those impacted,” Gutierrez said in a statement.
He added that the restaurant’s immediate focus was supporting employees affected by the incident while cooperating with law enforcement.
The murder charge is currently being handled through the juvenile justice system. However, because of the seriousness of the allegation, prosecutors could later seek to have the 16-year-old certified to stand trial as an adult. No such decision had been publicly announced as of Friday.
Authorities said the investigation remains active as detectives work to determine exactly what led to the confrontation.
