A Florida family is demanding answers after a 5-year-old boy was killed when a large classroom video display board fell on him at an elementary school.
Bellamy Dawkins-Morris was seriously injured shortly before noon Wednesday, Oct. 7, at Riviera Elementary School in Palm Bay, Florida.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:36 a.m., according to Brevard Public Schools. School employees immediately called 911 and began lifesaving efforts before emergency crews arrived.
Bellamy was rushed to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, where medical personnel continued trying to save him. He later died from his injuries.
The piece of equipment involved was a Promethean interactive video display board reportedly weighing about 120 pounds.
Palm Bay police initially described what happened as appearing to be a “tragic accident,” but authorities stressed that the circumstances remain under investigation.
Deputy Chief Nicholas Szczepanski said investigators from the department’s Special Victims Unit, Major Case Unit and crime scene personnel were working to determine exactly how the board came down.
Bellamy’s relatives said his mother was told the boy had been moving the display back and forth while other students were lining up when it tipped over.
That account has not yet been independently confirmed by investigators.
Family members told local news outlets that Bellamy was on the autism spectrum and could become interested in objects that moved repeatedly. They are now questioning whether the heavy display was adequately secured and whether enough supervision was in place when the incident occurred.
“We’re expecting him to be safe. He didn’t return to us,” Bellamy’s great-aunt Miriam Rodriguez said.
She said the family’s initial shock has turned into anger as relatives wait for an explanation about how such a heavy piece of classroom equipment could fall onto a child.
The family has also indicated that it is seeking legal counsel as it pushes for accountability.
Brevard Public Schools has not publicly determined that negligence or improper installation caused the accident. Those questions remain part of the ongoing investigation.
However, the district announced an additional safety step Thursday that was not included in initial reports of Bellamy’s death.
Superintendent Dr. Mark Rendell said Brevard Public Schools is immediately inspecting Promethean display boards across all of its campuses while authorities investigate what happened at Riviera Elementary. The district said the boards are installed by a licensed third-party vendor according to manufacturer guidelines. WKMG
The inspections could help determine whether the tragedy involved a problem limited to one installation or whether additional precautions are needed elsewhere in the district.
Rendell described Bellamy’s death as an unimaginable loss.
“We lost a life today, a precious young life,” the superintendent said after meeting with the family. “There are no words to describe that loss.”
He said his immediate priority was supporting Bellamy’s relatives as well as the students, teachers and staff affected by the tragedy.

Bellamy’s family, meanwhile, says it will continue pressing for answers about the display board, its installation and the circumstances surrounding the moments before it fell.
Police have not announced any criminal charges, and officials have not publicly identified evidence of criminal wrongdoing.
Until the investigation is completed, exactly why the board fell — and whether anything could have prevented Bellamy’s death — remains unanswered.
