Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision to bring their family back to Britain has opened a dramatic new chapter for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex — but it has also placed them back at the center of the royal tensions they spent years trying to escape.
Harry, 42, and Meghan, 45, relocated to the United Kingdom with Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, in late August, more than six years after stepping away from their roles as senior working members of the royal family.
The move represents one of the biggest changes for the couple since they settled in California in 2020.
But their return has not produced a complete royal reconciliation.
Harry has made progress in repairing his relationship with his father, King Charles III, but his long-running estrangement from older brother Prince William remains unresolved.
Harry, Meghan and their children met privately with Charles and Queen Camilla at Highgrove House in July, marking the first known meeting between the King and Archie and Lilibet since 2022.
The reunion was viewed as an important step after years of family turmoil.
However, there has been little evidence of a similar breakthrough between Harry and William.
Fresh reports this week also pushed back against claims that Harry and Meghan were preparing to apologize to William and Princess Kate over previous public criticism of the royal family.
A source close to the Sussexes dismissed those claims, suggesting the divisions between the brothers remain far from settled.
That complicated family backdrop now follows Harry much more closely than it did when he was living thousands of miles away in California.
At the same time, Harry and Meghan appear to be pursuing somewhat different professional routines as they settle into their new life.
Harry has maintained a busy schedule of charitable appearances and travel, including work connected to the Invictus Games and other causes he has supported for years.
Meghan has kept a comparatively lower public profile while continuing to develop her As Ever lifestyle business and helping the couple’s children adjust to life in Britain.
The Duchess made her first known public appearance in London since the move this week when she was spotted dining with Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai at Claridge’s.
The meeting came after Meghan was seen socializing closer to the couple’s Cotswolds home and offered another indication that she is gradually rebuilding a public and professional presence in Britain.
Despite speculation that their different schedules could create tension, recent public appearances do not support claims that the Sussex marriage is on the verge of collapse.
Harry and Meghan were photographed holding hands during a relaxed lunch outing at The Falkland Arms in the Cotswolds on October 1.
It was their first photographed outing together in Britain since making the move.
Witnesses described the couple as relaxed as they enjoyed an ordinary lunch while their children were at school.
Harry has also publicly emphasized the importance of staying connected to Meghan and their children.
In a new MasterClass released October 8, the prince said he follows a personal rule of spending no more than 10 days away from his wife and children.
Harry said balancing his work with being a husband and father has become a major priority, describing his family as a crucial source of happiness.
Those remarks present a very different picture from anonymous claims that the couple’s relationship is approaching a breaking point.
Still, their return to Britain comes with undeniable pressures.
Harry has repeatedly spoken about his complicated relationship with royal life, his security concerns in the United Kingdom and his desire to rebuild certain family relationships.
He has also previously said that he would like reconciliation with his family, even as the fallout from his memoir Spare, the couple’s Netflix projects and their 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey continues to shape relations with senior royals.
The couple must now navigate those unresolved disputes while raising two young children, maintaining businesses and charities and adjusting to life on the opposite side of the Atlantic.
Their return also does not appear to mean a complete abandonment of California.
The Sussexes are expected to maintain ties to their Montecito home while spending substantial time in Britain, effectively giving Archie and Lilibet a connection to both sides of their family background.
For Harry, returning to his home country carries an additional emotional weight.
The prince recently reflected on another major move in his life, revealing that he experienced a period of depression after leaving Britain for Canada with Meghan and Archie in late 2019.
Harry said the sudden change followed years of functioning under enormous stress and left him struggling when that pressure disappeared.
His latest comments suggest he remains intensely aware of how major life changes can affect both his personal wellbeing and his family.
That makes the Sussexes’ latest relocation especially significant.
Harry is now attempting to build a productive life in the country he once felt compelled to leave, while Meghan is trying to maintain the independent identity and businesses she developed during their years in America.
Whether the move ultimately brings the Sussexes closer to the royal family remains uncertain.
The July meeting with King Charles showed that some reconciliation is possible.
Harry’s relationship with William, however, remains the much bigger obstacle.
For now, the evidence points not to a marriage crisis but to a couple navigating another unusually complicated transition — one involving children, careers, international travel and a royal family feud that has followed them for years.
And after years of keeping much of their life an ocean away from Buckingham Palace, Harry and Meghan are once again attempting to build their future on royal territory.
