Céline Dion Slips and Falls During Emotional Comeback Concert (Video)

Céline Dion gave fans a scare during her highly anticipated Paris comeback Wednesday night when the superstar suddenly fell to the stage in the middle of a song.

The 58-year-old singer was performing “Dans un autre monde” at Plenitude Arena in Nanterre, just outside Paris, on Oct. 7 when part of her pants apparently became caught on one of her high heels.

Video from the concert showed Dion losing her balance and going down onstage.

Fortunately, the moment appeared far more frightening than serious.

Dion quickly got back to her feet, continued performing and gave the crowd a reassuring thumbs-up, signaling that she was OK.

There was no immediate indication that she suffered a significant injury.

The mishap came during an especially closely watched chapter of Dion’s career as she continues her return to full-length concerts following years of serious health problems.

Later in Wednesday’s show, another unexpected moment turned emotional.

After changing into a black dress, Dion began performing her 1995 hit “Pour que tu m’aimes encore” but briefly lost her place in the lyrics.

Rather than allowing the moment to derail the performance, the audience stepped in.

Thousands of fans began singing the words together, helping Dion through the song as she listened from the stage.

Their response visibly moved her.

“Thank goodness you’re here,” Dion told the audience in French, according to a translation of the moment.

She apologized before telling fans their support had deeply touched her.

The fall and impromptu audience singalong come less than a month after Dion made her long-awaited return to full concerts.

Her Sept. 12 opening night in Paris marked her first complete concert performance since March 2020.

Dion had been touring when the COVID-19 pandemic brought concerts around the world to a halt. Her attempts to return were later complicated by a far more personal battle.

In December 2022, Dion revealed that she had been diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that can cause severe muscle stiffness and spasms.

The diagnosis forced her to cancel performances and raised serious questions about whether one of the world’s most recognizable voices would ever be able to maintain the physical demands of a major concert again.

Dion has spoken openly about just how difficult it was to accept stepping away.

“I didn’t want to stop,” she told PEOPLE in 2024. “I wanted to stay onstage. I wanted to be brave instead of smart. That was wrong.”

Although Dion remained largely absent from traditional touring, she gradually began appearing in public again.

One of the biggest signs of her progress came at the July 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony, when she delivered a dramatic rendition of Édith Piaf’s “Hymne à l’amour.”

She performed again later that year at an Elie Saab fashion event in Saudi Arabia.

Those appearances, however, were very different from completing an entire concert.

That changed Sept. 12.

Dion became emotional almost immediately during the opening night of her Paris residency, tearing up during “On ne change pas” before addressing the audience.

“I made a promise,” she told fans. “I made a promise to come back, to be back on stage.”

“So here I am, singing for you and singing for me, singing life!”

The Paris shows are part of a limited residency running through October, with another series of performances planned for May 2027.

The comeback has already produced several memorable moments beyond the concerts themselves.

Following one September performance, Dion surprised fans outside a Paris hotel by climbing onto the hood of a car and singing and dancing barefoot as a crowd gathered around her.

For Dion, the residency appears to be about considerably more than simply returning to work.

Before the shows began, she described them as a way of thanking the fans who remained with her throughout her illness and long absence from the stage.

“It’s been so long,” she told Harper’s Bazaar. “I would like to offer them something to show how I’ve missed them.”

Wednesday night’s tumble could have become a frightening setback.

Instead, within seconds, Dion was back on her feet and singing — while the fans who had waited years to see her return were right there singing with her.
