Whoopi Goldberg quickly shut down The View’s live studio audience Wednesday after some viewers began booing at the mere mention of Republican Sen. Ted Cruz.

The awkward moment unfolded as Goldberg opened the show and previewed the day’s guests and political events.

Goldberg noted that Republicans were gathering in Dallas, Texas, for President Donald Trump’s midterm convention, where Trump was scheduled to headline alongside Vice President JD Vance, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Cruz.

But as soon as Goldberg mentioned the Texas senator’s name, some members of the audience apparently began jeering.

Goldberg immediately stopped them.

“Uh-uh! No, no, no, no!” she said while raising a finger toward the crowd.

The longtime View moderator then reminded the audience that the daytime talk show has traditionally welcomed guests from across the political spectrum.

Goldberg invoked the show’s late creator, Barbara Walters, saying Walters wanted The View to be a place where anyone could come and have a serious conversation.

“We want people to come, and we want to engage them,” Goldberg told the audience. “We don’t agree with them always, we don’t gel with them always, but we are respectful.”

Goldberg then offered a memorable piece of advice for anyone still tempted to boo, comparing the reaction to a burp and telling audience members to “swallow it back down.”

Her warning apparently worked.

Later in the broadcast, Goldberg again reminded viewers that The View’s table has been open to people with different political beliefs since the show began.

“We are kicking off the 30th season of The View and since day one this table has been open to anyone who wants to have a respectful conversation about issues, no matter what side of the aisle they’re on,” Goldberg said.

She then introduced Cruz, who appeared on the program to promote his new biography about Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, Going Further: The Incomparable Clarence Thomas.

This time, there were no boos.

Cruz walked onto the set to cheers and applause from the studio audience.

His appearance remained largely civil before becoming more heated toward the end, when Cruz sparred with Goldberg and co-host Sunny Hostin over affirmative action and the issues discussed in his book.

But when it came to welcoming Cruz onto the show, Goldberg made her expectations crystal clear — disagreement was allowed, but disrespect from the audience was not.
