A Florida deputy’s 20-year-old daughter was tragically killed in a bizarre chain-reaction crash involving an alligator — just hours before she was supposed to be formally sworn in as a member of law enforcement.

Cassi Taylor died late Sunday night after a wandering alligator triggered a nightmare accident on Interstate 95 near Titusville, Florida.

According to investigators, a Mercedes traveling on I-95 struck the alligator shortly before midnight.

Taylor, who was driving a Toyota Tacoma pickup behind the Mercedes, apparently tried desperately to avoid the wreckage. She lost control of her truck, which overturned and threw her onto the highway.

But the horrifying ordeal wasn’t over.

While Taylor was lying in the roadway, authorities say another vehicle struck her — and the driver kept going.

The 20-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

Taylor was the daughter of Indian River County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Scott Burke and had recently begun following in her father’s footsteps.

Just over a month before her death, she joined the sheriff’s office as a civilian corrections assistant.

Her formal swearing-in ceremony was scheduled for Monday — only hours after the crash that took her life.

“We are saddened to share the news of the death of one of our newest team members,” the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.

Friends remembered Taylor as a beloved young woman with a bright future ahead of her.

An online fundraiser described her as an “amazing young lady with a heart of pure gold who will dearly be missed.”

Investigators said Taylor was not wearing a seatbelt when her pickup overturned.

The alligator was also killed in the initial collision.

The 58-year-old Canadian man driving the Mercedes was not injured and remained at the scene, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Authorities are now searching for the driver who allegedly struck Taylor after she was thrown onto the interstate and then fled the scene.

For Taylor’s family and colleagues, the tragedy came at an especially heartbreaking moment — on what was supposed to be the beginning of her career in law enforcement.
