A morning shift at a California McDonald’s erupted into terrifying violence when an employee allegedly opened fire on a female co-worker before turning his gun on police — and being shot dead by officers.

The chaos unfolded around 9:30 a.m. Monday at the McDonald’s on West Lodi Avenue in Lodi, according to police.

Authorities identified the gunman as 29-year-old Jonhatan Anguiano, an employee at the restaurant who was allegedly armed with a semi-automatic handgun.

Investigators said Anguiano fired several shots inside the fast-food restaurant, striking a female employee.

Police released a surveillance image showing Anguiano dressed in his McDonald’s uniform with a long black sleeve covering his right arm shortly before the deadly confrontation.

Officers rushing to the scene encountered the wounded woman and then confronted Anguiano, authorities said.

Police say Anguiano fired at one of the officers as they closed in.

Officers returned fire, fatally shooting him.

“The suspect was ultimately pronounced deceased on scene,” the Lodi Police Department said.

The injured McDonald’s worker was rushed to a nearby hospital and was listed in stable condition.

Investigators have not revealed what may have sparked the shooting or whether Anguiano and the woman had been involved in any dispute before the gunfire erupted.

One witness said she was sitting in the restaurant’s drive-thru when she suddenly heard the shots.

“I was in the drive-thru at the cashier window when the shots were fired,” Cheryl Marie Steneck said. “I heard 4 shots being fired inside. Scary times.”

The violence rattled residents in Lodi, a close-knit community where news of the shooting quickly spread.

Lodi City Councilmember Cameron Bregman, who lives only about a block from the restaurant, said rumors were already swirling but urged residents to wait for investigators to determine exactly what happened.

“Lodi is a very small town, and so there’s about four or five stories already circling,” Bregman told KCRA. “The best thing I can do is let the police do the work and let the police release the reports.”

The San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office is now leading a multi-agency investigation into the police shooting.

Authorities are also working to determine why Anguiano allegedly opened fire inside the McDonald’s in the first place.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the shooting or has information about what happened to contact investigators.
