An airport worker was killed in a horrifying accident at Montréal-Trudeau International Airport after he was struck by a passenger jet while working on the tarmac.

Oscar Robayo, 39, was helping direct an Airbus A350 operated by French budget airline French Bee on Monday evening when tragedy struck.

Robayo was working near the aircraft as it was being moved with the help of a pushback vehicle ahead of its scheduled departure for Paris.

According to reports, Robayo fell while the massive jet was reversing and was struck by the aircraft.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene and transported him to a hospital, but he could not be saved. His death was confirmed Tuesday.

Robayo worked as a ramp employee for Samsic, a company that provides ground-handling and passenger support services at airports.

French Bee told The Canadian Press that the deadly incident happened while the Airbus A350 was being repositioned using a pushback vehicle.

The flight had been scheduled to travel from Montreal to Paris, but the aircraft remained grounded for several hours following the accident.

It eventually departed and arrived in Paris at approximately 1 p.m. Tuesday.

The tragedy reportedly unfolded in front of other airport workers and passengers.

Aéroports de Montréal CEO Yves Beauchamp said officials were providing support to those who witnessed the devastating accident.

“The loss of a member of our airport community affects us all deeply,” Beauchamp said.

He added that the airport was cooperating with investigators as authorities work to determine exactly how the fatal accident happened.

Officials have not yet released additional details about what caused Robayo to fall or precisely how he came into contact with the aircraft.

The investigation remains ongoing.
