A terrifying school bus crash in Kentucky sent more than a dozen elementary school students and their driver to medical care after the bus overturned on a rural road Monday afternoon.

The frightening accident happened around 4:45 p.m. on Aug. 24 in Bullitt County, where a Bullitt County Public Schools bus carrying 28 children from Lebanon Junction Elementary School overturned on Wilson Creek Road.

Thirteen students and the bus driver suffered minor injuries, according to local reports.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene as school officials scrambled to help frightened children and reunite them with their families.

Bullitt County Public Schools Superintendent Jesse Bacon said emergency medical crews transported the driver and eight students to area hospitals for evaluation. Another five students were taken to medical facilities by their parents.

The remaining children were checked at the scene before being released to their families.

Norton Children’s Hospital reportedly treated seven patients for minor injuries following the crash.

One fourth grader who survived the frightening ordeal described what he believed happened moments before the bus overturned.

“Somebody was trying to pass somebody,” Cooper Brown told WHAS 11. He said the bus driver appeared to pull over before something went wrong and the bus crashed.

Brown was seen with a bandage over his eyebrow following the wreck.

Investigators have not yet announced an official cause of the crash, but the Bullitt County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the circumstances leading up to it.

The scene drew a major emergency response involving Bullitt County Emergency Management, Bullitt County EMS, the Lebanon Junction Fire Department and sheriff’s deputies. Members of the school district’s transportation and safety teams also responded.

Bacon praised the first responders and school employees who helped the children in the chaotic moments after the crash.

“We continue to work closely with emergency personnel and our families to ensure everyone’s safety and well-being,” he said.

He added that the district was grateful for the community’s support and stressed that the safety of students and staff remained its highest priority.

Despite the terrifying sight of the overturned bus and the number of children taken for medical evaluation, authorities said the injuries reported were minor.

The investigation into exactly what caused the bus to overturn remains ongoing.
