A Tennessee traveling pastor will spend the rest of his life behind bars after a jury convicted him of a string of horrific crimes against children — while his wife was also found guilty of helping facilitate the abuse.

Benjamin Garlick, 35, was convicted Aug. 17 on seven counts of aggravated rape of a child, six counts of aggravated sexual battery, one count of soliciting the sexual exploitation of a minor and two counts of violating the Child Protection Act.

Circuit Court Judge Barry Tidwell sentenced Garlick to life without the possibility of parole on the aggravated rape convictions.

His wife, 32-year-old Shaantal Garlick, was also convicted of two counts of facilitating aggravated rape of a child and two counts of aggravated child neglect.

Both are expected back in court on Nov. 10, when they will be sentenced on the remaining charges.

The disturbing case began unfolding on Aug. 15, 2023, when the Murfreesboro Police Department began investigating allegations that a child, who was just 5 years old at the time, had been sexually abused.

Investigators said the abuse had allegedly taken place over a period of several years.

As detectives dug deeper into the allegations, two additional victims were identified.

Authorities said Shaantal knowingly neglected one of the victims and helped her husband carry out the abuse.

The husband and wife were initially arrested in September 2023.

Shaantal was later released on bond, but she was arrested again in March after prosecutors obtained a new indictment. She was once again released after posting a $75,000 bond.

That freedom ended after the jury returned its guilty verdict.

She was taken back into custody and is now being held at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center.

Court records revealed another twist in the case.

About a month before the couple’s first arrests, Shaantal reportedly filed for an order of protection against her husband.

She later filed for divorce on March 19, 2024, while the criminal investigation was still underway.

Benjamin Garlick remains behind bars as he waits for his next sentencing hearing.

Detective James Wilkinson, the lead investigator in the case, credited members of the department’s Child Protective Investigative Team for helping bring the case to trial.

“The children of Rutherford County are safer because of the compassion, dedication, and commitment each member of the CPIT Team brings to their roles every day,” Wilkinson said.

He also praised the team for helping the young victims come forward and tell investigators what had happened to them.

Before their arrests, Benjamin and Shaantal Garlick had portrayed themselves as a growing family ministry traveling across the United States.

Benjamin worked as a traveling evangelist, with the couple reportedly appearing at churches in states including Florida, Indiana, Minnesota and Texas.

The pair, who reportedly met when Shaantal was 18, even launched a GoFundMe campaign in early 2023 seeking $40,000 to purchase a new van.

According to the fundraiser, the vehicle was needed because their family was growing. Benjamin was listed as the person leading the fundraising effort.

Now, the pastor who once traveled the country preaching will spend the rest of his life in prison, while his wife also faces the possibility of a lengthy sentence for her role in the disturbing case.
