A dream honeymoon in Greece ended in unimaginable tragedy when a newlywed British couple and their pilot were killed in a fiery helicopter crash just minutes before they were scheduled to land.

Alexander Cromie and Marie Ebert were enjoying their honeymoon when the private helicopter carrying them plunged into a field on the Greek island of Sifnos on Monday, Aug. 17.

The aircraft reportedly burst into flames on impact, sending smoke billowing into the sky and scattering wreckage across the Tholos area.

Cromie and Ebert, both from England, were killed along with their pilot, 55-year-old Giorgos Raikos.

The helicopter had been flying from Markopoulo, about 13 miles southeast of Athens, to the popular vacation island when disaster struck.

According to reports, the helicopter was only minutes away from its scheduled 6:15 p.m. landing when something suddenly went terribly wrong.

Disturbing video circulating online appeared to show the helicopter rotating and rapidly losing altitude before crashing to the ground.

“The crash came minutes before the scheduled 6:15 p.m. landing,” a police official in Athens told The Times. “The helicopter was scheduled to leave 25 minutes later.”

Raikos was reportedly a veteran of the Hellenic Army who became a professional helicopter pilot after retiring from military service.

Firefighters, police and a doctor rushed to the crash site within minutes, while additional emergency crews were dispatched from the nearby island of Syros.

Two of the victims were reportedly found inside the burned-out wreckage. The third was discovered a short distance away.

Locals who witnessed the moments before the crash also reported hearing something unusual coming from the aircraft.

Manolis Foundoulakis, the deputy mayor of Sifnos, said people living near the crash site heard a “bizarre engine noise” as the helicopter approached the landing area.

Investigators are now desperately trying to determine what caused the aircraft to suddenly go down.

Aviation safety officials are examining flight records, the helicopter’s mechanical condition and weather conditions at the time of the crash.

The weather was reportedly normal, with no strong winds that would have immediately explained the disaster.

Even more chilling, Raikos had reportedly informed air traffic control that he was preparing to land shortly before communications suddenly went silent.

The crash has devastated the families of Cromie and Ebert, whose romantic getaway turned into a horrifying tragedy just moments before they were due to touch down.

The U.K. Foreign Office said it was working with Greek authorities and stood ready to assist the couple’s grieving families as the investigation continues.
