A golfer’s joke-filled video took a terrifying turn when he accidentally captured the moment he was struck by lightning in the middle of a violent storm.

Ohio golfer Chris Schiavone shared the jaw-dropping footage online after what he described as a one-in-a-million encounter on the course.

The clip begins with Schiavone laughing as his friends scramble through a torrential downpour to protect their golf clubs and pack up another cart.

But seconds later, everything changes.

As Schiavone films from near his own golf cart, a massive bolt of lightning suddenly strikes, sending a bright flash across the screen and producing a deafening crack.

The golfer immediately stops laughing, and the phone appears to fall as chaos erupts.

“1 in a 1,000,000 they say, very lucky and blessed, lightning is no joke! Watch to the end,” Schiavone wrote alongside the incredible video.

He later clarified that he was not actually holding the umbrella seen near the golf cart.

“Just so everyone knows, I was not holding on to an umbrella, it was in the bag keeping the clubs dry and I was standing behind the golf cart,” he explained.

Schiavone said the lightning struck him on the arm and left him with minor injuries. Fortunately, he survived the frightening encounter and said he was recovering.

The unbelievable footage quickly exploded online, racking up more than 60,000 likes on Instagram by Tuesday morning.

Viewers were stunned by what they saw — but plenty also questioned why the golfers remained on the course while lightning was nearby.

“Before the strike I was thinking doesn’t every golfer know not to shelter under a tree? Guess not,” one commenter wrote.

Another added, “Before the lightning ever struck I wondered why you’re sitting on a golf course under a tree… you’re asking for it!”

Others couldn’t resist joking about the bizarre timing of the strike.

“The lord spoke loudly here… don’t laugh at others misfortune,” one person joked, before adding that they were glad Schiavone was OK.

Another viewer pointed out the apparent irony of Schiavone laughing at his friends while standing near a golf cart, umbrella and tree during a lightning storm.

And one commenter delivered perhaps the most fitting joke of all.

“Do you think his phone is charged?”

Getting struck by lightning is extremely rare. According to the National Weather Service, a person’s odds of being struck in any given year are greater than one in a million, while the estimated lifetime odds are roughly one in 15,300.

Lightning strikes can be deadly, although the majority of victims survive.

Safety experts warn golfers to get off the course immediately when thunder or lightning approaches. Trees, golf carts, exposed clubs and bodies of water can all pose additional dangers during a storm.

For Schiavone, what began as a funny video of his buddies getting soaked ended with a frightening reminder of just how quickly a storm can turn dangerous.

And incredibly, his camera was rolling for the entire thing.
