A night on the water near one of America’s most famous landmarks turned into a nightmare Saturday after a boat suddenly capsized near the Statue of Liberty, killing a young woman and a 5-month-old baby girl.

The terrifying accident unfolded off Liberty Island in New York Harbor, where 14 people were aboard the vessel when it overturned and dumped everyone into the water.

NYPD Aviation and Harbor Units raced to the scene after authorities received a call about the capsized boat. A police scuba diving team was also dispatched as rescuers scrambled to pull passengers from the harbor.

A 27-year-old woman and the 5-month-old girl were recovered from the water in critical condition, according to law enforcement sources.

Both were rushed to a Brooklyn hospital, but despite efforts to save them, they were later pronounced dead.

The other 12 people aboard the boat were rescued from the water and taken to a local hospital. Their injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

It remains unclear what caused the vessel to suddenly overturn near Liberty Island.

Authorities are now investigating the deadly accident as they work to determine exactly what went wrong in the moments before the boat capsized.

The tragedy unfolded within sight of the Statue of Liberty, turning a busy stretch of New York Harbor into the scene of a frantic rescue operation and leaving two lives — including that of an infant — tragically lost.
