Congresswoman, 80, Hospitalized After Hit-and-Run on Way to Church

Rep. Marcy Kaptur was simply heading to church Sunday morning when her routine drive suddenly turned into a terrifying roadside nightmare.

The 80-year-old Ohio Democrat — the longest-serving woman in congressional history — was hospitalized after a violent two-car crash in Toledo that sent an engine flying across the street and left one vehicle sitting in a nearby yard.

Even more disturbing, police said the other driver fled the scene before officers arrived.

Neighbors described hearing a deafening crash shortly before 11 a.m. on August 2 near North Detroit and West Central avenues. When they looked outside, they were stunned by the destruction.

“It Was Just So Loud”

Kaptur was riding in a vehicle driven by her 26-year-old campaign manager, Kegan Zimmermann, according to Toledo police.

Investigators said their vehicle was traveling north on Detroit Avenue when a southbound car crossed into its path, triggering the collision at approximately 10:48 a.m.

Both Kaptur and Zimmermann were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Police later confirmed they were in stable condition.

The driver of the second vehicle, however, was nowhere to be found.

Morgan Valley, who lives near the crash site, told local station 13abc that she initially thought the noise came from cars hitting a metal water grate in the road.

Then she looked outside.

Valley said she saw a silver vehicle sitting in the street with its engine thrown clear across the roadway. The second car had ended up in her neighbor’s yard.

The scene was so severe that some people initially feared someone had been killed.

Valley immediately called 911. She recalled screaming in panic as a neighbor urged her to get back inside her home.

“All I could do was pray,” she said.

Witness Claims Driver Escaped in Another Car

A second witness reportedly gave police a major clue about what happened immediately after the collision.

According to WTOL, the witness said the driver of the other vehicle was picked up by someone in a separate car and driven away from the crash scene.

Police impounded both damaged vehicles and began gathering evidence as officers searched for the person responsible.

By Sunday evening, the Toledo Police Department said investigators had made “significant progress” and were following several strong leads.

The driver had still not been publicly identified.

Toledo Police Chief Mike Troendle said he personally spoke with Kaptur following the wreck and was relieved to learn she was recovering.

Troendle also vowed that officers would continue working to identify the fleeing driver and hold that person accountable.

Kaptur Was “Active and Alert”

Kaptur’s congressional office broke its silence several hours after the crash, reassuring worried supporters that the veteran lawmaker was awake and responsive.

“Congresswoman Kaptur is active, alert and being treated for non-life-threatening injuries,” her office said.

Her team thanked the Toledo police officers, firefighters and medical workers who rushed to the scene and treated those involved.

Kaptur was also said to be grateful for the hundreds of constituents who contacted her office after news of the crash spread.

Despite the frightening ordeal, her office said she was already looking forward to returning to her full schedule.

Crash Comes During Brutal Reelection Fight

The wreck comes at a politically tense moment for Kaptur, who has represented northwest Ohio in Congress since 1983.

Her decades-long career has made her the longest-serving woman in the history of the U.S. House, but it has also made her a major target for Republicans hoping to flip her seat.

Republican Derek Merrin is preparing to face Kaptur in a closely watched rematch for Ohio’s 9th Congressional District.

Merrin nearly defeated her in 2024, losing by approximately 2,400 votes in a contest so close that it was not called until two weeks after Election Day.

The district has since been redrawn to favor Republicans, potentially giving Kaptur the toughest reelection battle of her career. The Cook Political Report has rated the race a toss-up.

National Republicans have openly said they believe they can finally defeat the longtime congresswoman.

The National Republican Congressional Committee previously branded Kaptur an “out-of-touch, career politician” and said it intended to “retire” her from Washington.

Kaptur, however, has argued that her longevity is proof of her commitment to the working-class communities she represents.

She has said her own life experiences shaped her approach to public service and that she intends to continue fighting for Americans who feel ignored by political leaders.

For now, Kaptur is recovering as Toledo police search for the driver accused of leaving the mangled crash scene behind.

The frightening collision has added an unexpected new chapter to an already high-stakes year — one that began as a drive to church and ended with a congresswoman in the hospital and a suspected hit-and-run driver on the loose.
