Veteran British actor Tom Chadbon, best known to fans for his memorable roles in Doctor Who and Game of Thrones, has died at the age of 80.

His death was announced Monday, July 27, by Fantom Events, the publishing and events company he had worked with. The company said Chadbon had “passed away last weekend” and remembered him as a “warm and friendly man” with a long list of television and film credits. (People.com)

Chadbon was a familiar face to generations of TV viewers, appearing in everything from Doctor Who and James Bond to Peep Show and Game of Thrones.

In Doctor Who, he was especially beloved for playing Duggan opposite Tom Baker in the 1979 serial City of Death, one of the most famous stories from the classic era of the long-running BBC sci-fi series. For Game of Thrones fans, Chadbon was recognized for his later role as High Septon Maynard in the HBO fantasy epic, one of the final screen appearances of his career.

His credits stretched across decades of British television. Along with Doctor Who and Game of Thrones, Chadbon appeared in Sherlock Holmes, Midsomer Murders, The Bill, Foyle’s War, Where the Heart Is and Peep Show. He also had a role in the 2006 James Bond film Casino Royale.

Tributes quickly poured in after news of his death broke. Actress Lisa Bowerman, who appeared in Doctor Who alongside him, reacted to the news by calling it “incredibly sad” and remembering him as “wonderful.”
