King Charles is once again trying to keep the door open for Prince Harry — but some royal watchers believe his latest move could send a pointed message to Prince William.
The monarch reportedly plans to offer the Duke of Sussex a room at Buckingham Palace during Harry’s expected trip to the U.K. in September, a gesture experts say may deepen the divide between Charles and his heir over how to handle the Sussex drama.
According to The Sun, Harry is expected to return to Britain in September, and the king is prepared to make Buckingham Palace available to him during the visit. People also reported on Harry’s expected U.K. trip, noting that Buckingham Palace and Harry’s representatives declined to comment on the accommodation report.
But behind palace walls, the offer is already being interpreted as something much bigger than a place to stay.
Royal broadcaster Ian Pelham Turner told Fox News Digital that Charles’ reported invitation is a “potential lifeline” for Harry — and a possible act of “defiance” toward William, who is said to want no further contact with his estranged younger brother.
“Prince Harry’s potential lifeline return to the United Kingdom in September and being offered accommodation at Buckingham Palace by King Charles is, to me, a major sign of defiance to William’s wishes of no future contact with his erstwhile brother,” Pelham Turner said.
The reported move comes amid fresh claims that Charles and William are not fully aligned when it comes to Harry. Royal author Robert Jobson recently told Page Six that William and Harry have “different agendas” and very different relationships with their father.
Fox News Digital reached out to Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace for comment.
Royal author Christopher Andersen, who wrote The King, said William’s position on Harry hardened after the release of Spare, the Duke of Sussex’s explosive 2023 memoir.
“When it comes to Harry, William drew a line in the sand after the publication of Harry’s memoir, Spare, and he is disappointed that his father is not standing up for him,” Andersen told Fox News Digital.
Andersen said William still loves and respects his father, but he also knows that he, Kate Middleton and their children represent the monarchy’s future.
“William loves his father and appreciates better than anyone how underestimated Charles has been over the years,” Andersen said. “He wants the king to leave his mark on history. But deep down, he knows he and his family — particularly his wife, Kate — are the future of the monarchy.”
The father-son tension does not appear to be an open feud. Experts describe Charles and William as civil and respectful toward each other. But that does not mean they agree.
Sources told Page Six that disagreements remain over how the monarchy should be run and how the royal family should deal with Harry and Meghan Markle after years of public accusations, interviews, documentaries and the memoir that left the institution badly bruised.
Royal biographer Hugo Vickers put it bluntly to Page Six: “The problem with William is that he thinks he knows best.”
Andersen said the family dynamic is complicated by Charles’ health, his age and his apparent desire for peace.
“King Charles is tired,” Andersen said. “He would like to have everything as it was before Megxit. But he knows how willful William is.”
He added that the royal family has never been built around warmth in the way outsiders might imagine.
“Queen Elizabeth’s cousin Margaret Rhodes told me more than once that the relationship between Charles and his late mother wasn’t cozy,” Andersen said. “But what people don’t know is that the royal family isn’t set up to be ‘cozy.’ Well, it still isn’t. It’s ‘The Firm,’ remember?”
British broadcaster and photographer Helena Chard said William is known to be stubborn behind palace doors and is not someone who forgives easily.
“Megxit forced William to grow up fast as the future king,” Chard told Fox News Digital.
She said William believes the monarchy had to be protected after Harry and Meghan stepped back as senior working royals in 2020 and moved to California.
“He had to protect the institution while his brother walked away,” Chard said. “William believes the monarchy must be seen to do the right thing, even when it’s painful. From what I understand, he felt his father didn’t handle that firmly enough.”
According to Chard, Charles and William are approaching the Harry situation from two very different places.
“Where Charles may want to smooth things over, to play peacemaker with Harry, William and Catherine are determined to set boundaries,” she said. “Charles is reigning, but William and Catherine are planning. And that planning is starting to look a lot like leading.”
She added, “Charles wants healing. William and Catherine want survival and stability. William is not doing this to be difficult. He’s doing it because he believes it’s right.”
Harry and Meghan’s relationship with the royal family has been strained for years. The couple stepped down from royal duties in 2020 and relocated to California, saying they wanted independence after years of intense media scrutiny and what they described as a lack of support from the palace.
Since then, they have publicly discussed their grievances in interviews, a Netflix documentary series and Harry’s memoir Spare. The book included deeply personal claims about William, Charles, Kate and other members of the family, further widening the royal rift.
The drama appeared to take a new turn on July 10, when Charles reportedly hosted Harry and his family at Highgrove House, the king’s private estate west of London. Buckingham Palace confirmed the meeting, which royal observers viewed as a possible step toward repairing the fractured relationship.
But the reunion reportedly happened without William and Kate being told in advance.
Vanity Fair royal correspondent Katie Nicholl reported that “not even the Prince and Princess of Wales were made aware that the meeting was taking place.” A source close to Charles described the hour-long meeting as “completely cloak-and-dagger” and said it was “orchestrated by the king.”
While Charles and Harry met, William and Kate were at the DMI Royal Charity Polo Cup 2026 at Guards Polo Club in Windsor. William did not meet with Harry during the visit.
Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams told Fox News Digital that Charles and William are “very different characters” with “conflicting temperaments.” Still, he said the reality is clear: William, Kate and their children are the monarchy’s future.
“What no one can alter is that William, Kate, and their family are the future of the monarchy,” Fitzwilliams said. “And it is natural for the king, who is battling cancer, to want to see his grandchildren.”
Andersen said William’s absence from the July reunion was no accident.
“William is making it clear that he has his own set of principles, his own set of rules about what is right and wrong,” Andersen said.
He added that William believes Harry has damaged the royal family too many times.
“He feels Harry has violated those rules one too many times,” Andersen said. “It’s not entirely personal. William has a strong sense of duty when it comes not only to his family but also to his country and his family’s place in history.”
According to Andersen, William sees Harry’s actions as a betrayal of the monarchy across generations.
“William feels Harry has betrayed not only the current generation of royals but also past generations, including their grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, and future generations,” he said.
British royal expert Hilary Fordwich said reports of a major fracture between Charles and William may be overstated, but she acknowledged that the two men do not appear to see eye to eye on Harry.
“Prince William is no fool,” Fordwich said. “Every time his zero-tolerance approach is proven correct, his influence increases.”
Harry, meanwhile, has made it clear that he wants some kind of reconciliation. In a May 2025 interview with the BBC, he said he would like to make peace with his family.
“There’s no point in continuing to fight anymore,” Harry said.
But whether King Charles’ reported Buckingham Palace offer will help heal the family — or inflame tensions with William — remains one of the biggest questions hanging over the House of Windsor.
