A funeral for a young car crash victim turned into a terrifying scene in Detroit after police say a mourner opened fire as people were leaving the service, wounding multiple people before an officer shot the suspect.

The shooting happened just before 6 p.m. Friday outside Greater Love Tabernacle Church on Plymouth Road, where mourners had gathered to pay their respects.

According to Detroit police, a fight broke out as people were exiting the funeral. During the altercation, the suspect allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired several shots into the crowd.

Police Chief Todd Bettison said four people were wounded by the suspect’s gunfire. An officer who had been stationed in the area then returned fire, striking the gunman and taking him into custody.

The officer was not injured.

“Our officer is absolutely a hero,” Bettison said. “You don’t come to work expecting to have to do this, but the officer saw the threat and took action.”

Mayor Mary Sheffield said the victims are all in their twenties. They were struck in their lower extremities and are expected to survive.

Bettison said officers had already been posted at the funeral because authorities were concerned violence could break out. Officials have not said what sparked the fight.

The violence unfolded outside a house of worship, turning what was supposed to be a time of grief and support into a frightening scene for families already mourning a loss.

Sheffield addressed the shooting in a statement, saying her thoughts were with the victims, their families, and the congregation.

“I am grateful that all of the victims are expected to survive,” the mayor said. “A place of worship should be safe. I want to thank the Detroit Police Department for the intelligence work that put officers in position to protect this congregation, and for the courage they showed today.”

The church also released a statement on social media, saying it is working with authorities.

“We have been praying every day at noon and sincerely believe God’s covering interceded what could have been worse,” the church wrote.

The funeral home also responded, saying its heart was with those injured and everyone affected by the violence.

“What should have been a time for remembrance, healing, and support was disrupted by an incident that has affected our entire community,” the statement said.

Officials said they believe the shooting was an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
