Sam Neill spent his final years on his own, but not bitter.
The beloved Jurassic Park star died Monday, July 13, in Sydney, Australia, after what his family described as a sudden and unexpected illness. He was 78.
Neill’s death came months after he had shared that he was cancer-free following treatment for stage-three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma.
Best known to millions as Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park, Neill built a career that lasted more than five decades. He also starred in The Piano, The Hunt for Red October, and dozens of other film and television projects.
But away from the screen, Neill’s later years were quieter.
After his split from Australian journalist Laura Tingle, the actor openly admitted that single life could sometimes feel lonely.
Neill and Tingle, 65, who serves as ABC’s global affairs editor, were together for about three years before they separated in 2021. Their breakup was said to be amicable.
A source close to the former couple claimed there was no bitterness between them.
“Sam and Laura’s relationship ended with genuine warmth rather than bitterness,” the source said. “There was never any animosity between them, and they continued to care deeply about one another after they went their separate ways.”
The source added that Neill embraced his independence after the split, but the quiet was not always easy.
“Although Sam embraced the fact he was single again and rarely complained about it, there were times, particularly during his cancer treatment, when he admitted the quiet could be difficult,” the insider claimed. “He missed having someone by his side through the tougher days, but he never looked back on the relationship with anything other than gratitude.”
Following news of Neill’s death, Tingle shared an emotional tribute on Instagram.
She posted previously unseen photos and videos from their relationship, including moments from boat trips, beach outings, evenings out, and visits to Neill’s New Zealand winery.
Her message was simple and heartbreaking.
“Sweet dreams, darling Sam,” she wrote.
The tribute also showed a more private side of Neill. In some images, he was seen ironing, preparing meals, spending time with animals on his property, and playing guitar.
Friends said the photos reflected the relationship Neill and Tingle had kept mostly out of the public eye.
Neill had once joked about the unlikely pairing between a movie star and one of Australia’s most respected political journalists.
“My guess is that I’m in it for the politics; she’s in it for the wine,” he quipped during their relationship.
After their split, Neill spoke candidly about life alone.
“I had three wonderful years with Laura Tingle, and I am so grateful for that,” he said in a 2023 interview.
He also admitted that being single late in life came with mixed feelings.
“I am a solitary single man now, and I wonder if that’s a personal failing or just bad luck,” he said. “I am past my use-by date and would not marry again.”
Neill added, “These days I’m lucky if I go on the odd date. That suits me well, but it’s also a bit lonely. There were times last year that I could have done with a bit of companionship to see me through my blood cancer treatment.”
Neill’s 2023 memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This?, also led him to reflect on the women who had shaped his life.
He said writing the book made him think about “how much gratitude I have for people like my mother, and the women who’ve been good to me.”
He also acknowledged that some of those memories came with regret.
“And some of that is not without regrets,” he admitted.
Neill’s family announced his death in a statement shared on Instagram.
“It is with immense sadness that the whānau (family) of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13 July, in Sydney, Australia,” the statement said. “Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life.”
The family said his death was sudden and unexpected, but noted that he remained cancer-free at the time.
They also thanked the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their care and asked for privacy as they grieved.
Neill first went public with his cancer diagnosis in 2023. He had discovered the illness while promoting Jurassic World Dominion in 2022.
Even then, he spoke about death with his usual dry humor and calm honesty.
“I’m not in any way frightened of dying,” he said. “That doesn’t worry me. It’s never worried me from the beginning, but I would be annoyed.”
He added, “I’d be annoyed because there are things I still want to do. Very irritating, dying. But I’m not afraid of it.”
For fans, Neill will always be remembered as the warm, witty, quietly magnetic actor who helped make Jurassic Park unforgettable.
For those closest to him, he was something more personal: a man who loved deeply, worked steadily, lived thoughtfully, and faced his final chapter with honesty rather than fear.
