Joanna Pettet, the British-born actress best known for The Group, Casino Royale, and Knots Landing, has died. She was 83.

Pettet died Tuesday, July 7. Her friend and former manager, Pam DuBois, shared the news on Facebook. A cause of death was not disclosed.

DuBois said Pettet’s death came on an especially painful date. It was the 31st anniversary of the death of Pettet’s son, Damien Zachary Cord, whom she shared with her former husband, actor Alex Cord.

“We all loved Jo,” DuBois wrote. “But there was one person who loved her more. And yesterday on the 31st anniversary of his death. Damien Zach took his mother to heaven and there she will stay with him forever.”

Pettet first broke through in Sidney Lumet’s 1966 film The Group, based on Mary McCarthy’s bestselling novel about a circle of Vassar graduates trying to make their way through marriage, ambition, betrayal, and the social changes of the era.

She played Kay, the most down-to-earth woman in the group. Her character’s story becomes one of the film’s more painful arcs after she marries an abusive man.

The movie was considered bold for its time. It dealt with subjects that mainstream Hollywood did not often put front and center, including sexuality and lesbianism.

The cast was packed with talent, including Candice Bergen, Jessica Walter, Joan Hackett, Shirley Knight, Elizabeth Hartman, Kathleen Widdoes, and Mary-Robin Redd.

A year later, Pettet joined the wild, star-studded James Bond parody Casino Royale. The 1967 film starred Peter Sellers, David Niven, Woody Allen, William Holden, and several other big names.

Pettet played Mata Bond, the daughter of James Bond and the legendary spy Mata Hari.

Casino Royale was not exactly embraced by critics when it came out, but over the years, it became one of the stranger and more talked-about oddities connected to the Bond world.

Pettet also appeared in Anatole Litvak’s 1967 war drama The Night of the Generals, but television soon became a major part of her career.

Through the 1960s and 1970s, she showed up on many of the shows older TV fans remember well, including Route 77, The Doctors, The Fugitive, Dr. Kildare, Mannix, Banacek, Medical Center, Police Story, and Police Woman.

She also appeared in four episodes of Rod Serling’s Night Gallery between 1970 and 1972.

In the 1980s, Pettet kept working steadily. She appeared on Charlie’s Angels, The Love Boat, Fantasy Island, and Knight Rider. She also had a recurring role on Knots Landing, one of the signature nighttime soaps of the era.

One of her final screen roles came in the 1990 film Terror in Paradise, produced by low-budget horror filmmaker Roger Corman. She retired from acting not long after that.

Pettet was born Joanna Jane Salmon on November 16, 1942, in London. She moved to New York at 16 to study acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse and Lincoln Center.

Her Broadway debut came in 1961 in Take Her, She’s Mine, a comedy directed by George Abbott and starring Art Carney and Elizabeth Ashley.

She later appeared on Broadway in The Chinese Prime Minister in 1964 and Poor Richard that same year, alongside Alan Bates and Gene Hackman.

Off screen, Pettet’s life drew attention too. She was married to actor Alex Cord from 1968 until 1989. She was also romantically linked to actors Terrence Stamp and Alan Bates.

Pettet and Bates first dated while appearing together in Poor Richard. Decades later, in 2002, they reconnected. Bates died of pancreatic cancer the following year and reportedly left Pettet £95,000.

Pettet also had a chilling connection to one of the most infamous crimes in Hollywood history.

On the afternoon of August 8, 1969, she and actress Barbara Lewis visited their friend Sharon Tate for lunch. Later that night, Tate and four others were murdered at the home by members of the Charles Manson family.

That afternoon visit was later included in Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, with Rumer Willis playing Pettet.

Information about Pettet’s survivors was not immediately available.

Her cousin, rock music author and Rolling Stone writer David Dalton, died in 2022. Pettet and Dalton grew up together in London and lived through World War II air raids as children.

Pettet’s career took her from Broadway to major studio films to some of television’s most familiar shows. Her life also carried deep heartbreak, famous romances, and a haunting link to a Hollywood tragedy that people still talk about more than half a century later.
