Katie Couric is opening up about a frightening health scare that left her unable to remember basic details — including the year, the president and even the existence of her newborn granddaughter.

The 69-year-old journalist revealed the alarming episode in a July 6 Substack post titled “The Day I’ll Never Remember,” describing the incident as “freaky” and admitting that several hours of her life are now completely blank.

According to Couric, June 27 started out like any normal summer day in Aspen. She walked to the farmer’s market, picked up an iced coffee and bought peaches, nectarines, kettle corn and a straw hat she admitted she “really didn’t need.”

After returning home, she ate cereal with one of the peaches and got dressed for an appearance at the Aspen Ideas Festival, where she was scheduled to speak on two panels.

“I decided to wear a white linen suit, a navy and white knit sleeveless shirt, and my new hat,” Couric wrote.

When her husband, financier John Molner, got back from the gym, the couple drove to the Aspen Institute campus. Couric said she was excited to grab lunch from the hot dog stand before her panels.

“That’s the last thing I remember,” she revealed.

Couric somehow made it through both panel appearances, but she has no memory of either one.

“I have no idea what we talked about or of what occurred when the panels ended,” she wrote.

The situation became terrifying when Molner noticed something was seriously wrong. According to him, Couric suddenly seemed weak, dizzy and “out of it.” He immediately took her to Aspen Valley Hospital, where doctors began checking for signs of a stroke.

During her exam, Couric was asked basic questions, including the date and who was president.

“I got them wrong,” she recalled. “I wasn’t sure of the month. I thought it was 2024. And I believed Joe Biden was president.”

Even more unsettling, Couric said she could not remember that her newborn granddaughter, Virginia, even existed.

As hospital staff began “stroke protocol,” Molner noticed his wife kept reintroducing herself to the nurses every time they entered the room.

Thankfully, an MRI ruled out a stroke. Doctors later diagnosed Couric with transient global amnesia, a temporary condition that causes sudden short-term memory loss.

Her doctor explained the diagnosis in a note, writing that it meant she had lost her short-term memory — but that it would come back the next day.

“You are safe!” the doctor told her.

Couric said she also read an article from the New England Journal of Medicine that described transient global amnesia as a sudden inability to retain new information for several hours, usually in a middle-aged or older person, while alertness and other cognitive functions remain intact.

As for why it happened, Couric said the answer remains unclear.

“The cause seems to be as mysterious as the brain itself,” she wrote, adding that someone described it as her brain “failing to hit the record button.”

Although the scare could have been much worse, Couric said she is grateful the episode was not a stroke.

“While this was a freaky occurrence, it could have been much more serious,” she wrote. “So ultimately, I’m relieved — even though several hours of a Saturday in June will always be missing for me.”
