The mystery surrounding Mitch McConnell’s condition has taken a disturbing new turn after a prominent Trump ally made an explosive and unverified claim about the longtime Kentucky senator’s health.
Right-wing activist Laura Loomer, who has close ties to President Donald Trump and members of his administration, claimed that McConnell is “brain dead” and will never return to Congress.
“High level source close to the White House tells me ‘Mitch McConnell is officially brain dead. He’s not coming back,’” Loomer wrote Monday in a post on X.
The shocking allegation has not been independently verified, and McConnell’s office has not confirmed that the 84-year-old senator is brain dead, suffering organ failure or being kept on life support.
However, the claim quickly intensified the growing speculation surrounding McConnell, who has remained hospitalized since June 14 and has not been seen publicly in more than three weeks.
McConnell was reportedly found unconscious at his Washington, D.C., home following an apparent cardiac emergency. Emergency dispatch audio reportedly referred to CPR being performed for a cardiac arrest, though his office has not publicly confirmed the precise nature of the medical crisis.
Loomer, 33, operates without an official government position, but she has reportedly developed considerable influence inside Trump’s political orbit.
Administration insiders have nicknamed her “Trump’s loyalty enforcer” because of her efforts to remove government officials she believes are not sufficiently loyal to the president.
Loomer has previously traveled aboard Trump’s campaign plane and has openly discussed her access to the president and members of his inner circle. She has also taken credit for helping derail appointments, push out administration officials and influence personnel decisions.
Her apparent access has made her latest claims impossible for some political observers to ignore, even though she has provided no public evidence to support them.
Later Monday night, Loomer expanded on her initial post, claiming that a White House source had told her McConnell was suffering from “organ failure.”
“The White House has been told ‘McConnell isn’t ever coming back,’” she wrote.
McConnell’s staff did not verify either allegation.
Journalist Desiree Townsend, who previously obtained the emergency responder recording connected to McConnell’s hospitalization, claimed she had been hearing similar information from her own sources.
“I have heard the same thing from my sources for days,” Townsend wrote on X.
Townsend also claimed she was waiting at the hospital for the possibility that McConnell could be removed from life support, adding that his U.S. Capitol Police security detail remained at the facility as of Monday afternoon.
Her assertions also remain unverified.
Kylie Jane Kremer, executive director of the pro-Trump organization Women for America First, reacted to the growing rumors by writing, “I think this whole situation surrounding Mitch McConnell just became far more serious.”
McConnell’s office has continued to release only limited information about his condition.
When reporters asked whether the senator was conscious or receiving life support, a spokesperson referred them to a July 2 statement saying McConnell was recovering and continuing to work.
“Senator McConnell appreciates the outpouring of support he’s receiving while he continues his recovery in the hospital,” the statement said.
“The Senator continues to improve, and is working closely with his staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session.”
On Monday, McConnell communications director Stephanie Penn responded to detailed questions about the senator’s health by saying the office would “be sure to keep you updated.”
The Associated Press also reported Tuesday that McConnell remained hospitalized and that his office had provided few concrete details about his condition or whether he would return when the Senate reconvenes.
McConnell’s chief of staff is Terry Carmack, who has worked for the senator since 2010 and was promoted to the powerful position in 2021. His reported annual salary is more than $226,000.
Despite repeated statements that McConnell is working with his staff, there have been no recent photographs, videos or public appearances showing the senator during his hospitalization.
Neighbors near his Washington home have reportedly said they have not seen him since he was taken to the hospital.
McConnell’s wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, was reportedly seen in China three days after his hospitalization. She has not publicly addressed her husband’s medical condition.
McConnell, who has represented Kentucky in the Senate since 1985, has suffered several highly publicized health problems in recent years.
He was hospitalized for more than a week in February while being treated for what his office described as “flu-like symptoms.”
He has also suffered multiple falls and two alarming freezing episodes during public appearances. In 2023, a fall at a Washington hotel left him with a concussion and a fractured rib.
McConnell has increasingly relied on a wheelchair while moving through the Capitol, though aides previously described its use as a precaution connected to lingering mobility problems. He survived polio as a child.
The veteran Republican stepped down as Senate GOP leader in January 2025 after becoming the longest-serving party leader in Senate history.
He is not running for another term and is scheduled to leave office when his current term ends in January 2027.
Until McConnell or his staff provides clearer information, questions about his condition — and whether he will ever return to Capitol Hill — are likely to keep growing.
