Mitch McConnell’s latest health scare was reportedly far more serious than the public was first told.
The 84-year-old former Senate majority leader was found “unconscious” at his Washington, D.C., home last month, with emergency responders told CPR was already in progress, according to a newly surfaced dispatch call.
The June 14 call, reported by The New York Post, described a frightening scene at McConnell’s residence, where first responders were sent for a possible “cardiac arrest.” The call has now raised fresh questions about the Kentucky Republican’s health and how much his team initially revealed about the medical emergency.
For more than a week after the incident, McConnell remained absent from the Senate with little public explanation. His office later said he was continuing to recover while staying involved in his work.
“Senator McConnell is still working closely with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters as he continues his recovery. However, he will not be voting this week,” spokesperson David Popp said on June 22, according to Politico.
Another spokesperson, Robert Steurer, referred questions to that same statement after the emergency call became public.
The health scare came as McConnell prepares to leave the Senate at the end of his current term. He is set to retire in January after decades as one of the most powerful Republicans in Washington.
South Dakota Sen. John Thune, who succeeded McConnell as Senate Republican leader, told Punchbowl News on June 15 that he had spoken with McConnell and said the longtime Kentucky lawmaker was “clearly dialed into what’s going on” in the Senate despite his hospitalization.
Still, the newly revealed emergency dispatch has put a sharper spotlight on McConnell’s string of health incidents.
Earlier this year, McConnell checked himself into the hospital “in an abundance of caution” after experiencing “flu-like symptoms,” according to his office. That February hospital stay lasted about eight days and caused him to miss several important Senate votes.
He has also suffered a series of public falls and medical episodes in recent years. In October, he fell at the Capitol after being confronted over immigration enforcement. In December 2024, he fell and injured his wrist. In 2023, he suffered a concussion after another fall.
McConnell also drew national attention after appearing to freeze during press conferences, fueling speculation and concern about his health and his ability to continue handling the demands of public office.
Despite his age and health setbacks, McConnell has remained active in Senate business and has broken with his own party on several high-profile votes.
He was the only Republican to oppose Tulsi Gabbard’s confirmation as national intelligence director and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s appointment as health secretary. He also joined Republican Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins in voting against Pete Hegseth’s confirmation as defense secretary.
Now, with the latest emergency call coming to light, McConnell’s private health battle is facing renewed public scrutiny just months before his long Senate career comes to an end.
