NFL Star’s Mother Found Dead and Brother Charged with Murder

The family of NFL star Calais Campbell has been rocked by a shocking tragedy after his 71-year-old mother was found dead inside her Atlanta home — and one of his brothers was charged with murder.

Nateal Campbell, the beloved matriarch of the Campbell family, was discovered unresponsive inside her townhouse in Atlanta’s upscale Buckhead neighborhood during a welfare check Tuesday afternoon, according to police and local reports.

Officers were called to the home on Roswell Road NW just after 12:30 p.m. after relatives became worried about her. When police arrived, they reportedly learned that a man had barricaded himself inside the residence.

Officers eventually entered the home and took the man into custody.

The suspect was later identified as 41-year-old Ciarre Campbell, the older brother of the Baltimore Ravens defensive end. He was booked into the Fulton County Jail early Wednesday morning and charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of a felony, according to jail records cited by The Post.

The heartbreaking news left the Campbell family grieving the loss of the woman they called their “matriarch.”

“We are devastated to share that the Campbell Family has lost its matriarch, Mrs. Nateal Campbell,” the family said in a statement shared by NFL insider Ian Rapoport.

“While the details of her passing are still being investigated, we take comfort in knowing she is reunited with our father, her beloved Chuck, and in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We ask for privacy at this time so that we may honor her and share in our overwhelming grief privately and as a family.”

Authorities have released only limited details about what happened inside the home. Police reportedly obtained search warrants for the Buckhead townhouse, clothing, and DNA evidence, according to Ciarre Campbell’s defense attorney, Jay Abt.

Investigators also revealed that officers had been called to the same home before.

Atlanta Police Lt. Christopher Butler told WSB-TV that a review of prior calls showed police had been at the location in April for a possible arson incident and that there were “some indications” of possible mental health issues involving an individual connected to the home.

It was not immediately clear whether Ciarre Campbell had been living with his mother at the time of her death.

The case has stunned the NFL world and those familiar with the Campbell family’s powerful story.

Calais Campbell, a second-round pick out of the University of Miami in 2008, has built one of the most respected careers in football. The veteran defensive end has been selected to the Pro Bowl six times and remains one of the top active sack leaders in the league.

Off the field, Campbell has also been widely praised for his charity work.

In 2025, he was named the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year after years of community service through the Charles Richard Campbell Foundation, which he founded with his mother and seven siblings in honor of his late father.

The foundation focuses on helping young people by teaching life skills and giving back to the community.

Now, the family that spent years building a legacy of service is facing an unimaginable loss — and a criminal case involving one of their own.

The investigation remains ongoing.
