Prince Harry Accused of ‘Using His Son’ to Fix Public Image

Prince Harry is facing fresh backlash after critics accused him of dragging his young son into a carefully timed charm offensive aimed at winning back Britain.

The Duke of Sussex, 41, found himself at the center of another royal storm after a Father’s Day video posted by Meghan Markle showed their son Archie wearing an England soccer jersey while cuddling up to his dad.

The sweet family moment may have looked innocent to some. But to Harry’s harshest critics, the timing was impossible to ignore.

The clip surfaced as reports swirl that Harry, Meghan, and their two children, Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, could return to the U.K. this summer for what would be the kids’ first visit to Britain in four years.

Now, royal watchers are asking whether the England shirt was more than just a cute detail.

Some critics believe Harry was sending a not-so-subtle message to British soccer fans and the wider public as he prepares for another highly watched trip back home.

One source familiar with the reaction said some observers believe the photo was “highly calculated.”

“Harry knows there will be enormous attention on his return to Britain,” the source said. “People are reading all kinds of messages into that photograph. Some believe showing Archie in an England shirt was a quiet attempt to reconnect with the British public and create goodwill before the visit.”

The insider added, “Whether that was the intention or not, that is how some people are seeing it.”

The Father’s Day tribute was posted by Meghan, 44, and focused on Harry’s life as a dad. The video showed private family moments with Archie and Lilibet, who are rarely seen in public.

Meghan captioned the post with a glowing message to her husband.

“They’re so lucky to have you,” she wrote. “We all are. Happy Father’s Day to our one and only.”

But the warm message quickly became overshadowed by the image of Archie in the England jersey.

Another insider said the backlash centers on whether Harry is letting his son become part of a broader public relations push.

“The criticism is that Harry is allowing Archie to become part of the story,” the insider said. “Detractors are calling it an obvious attempt to curry favor with England fans at a time when Harry is trying to rebuild bridges in Britain.”

The controversy comes as speculation grows over Harry’s possible return to the U.K. in July.

The Duke is expected to attend Invictus Games-related events in London and Birmingham between July 6 and July 10. The next Invictus Games will be held in Birmingham in 2027.

The trip could also come at a delicate time for the Royal Family.

Harry has publicly said he wants reconciliation after years of painful family tension, explosive interviews, legal battles, and his dramatic 2020 exit from royal life with Meghan.

In May 2025, Harry told the BBC he hoped to repair his relationship with his relatives. He has also repeatedly raised concerns about his family’s safety when visiting Britain after losing automatic state-funded police protection.

Despite the years of bad blood, reports suggest there may be discussions about a possible meeting between King Charles and his grandchildren.

Charles, 77, has not seen Archie and Lilibet in person since Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June 2022.

One palace aide said there is “a genuine desire” among some family members to move forward.

“Any opportunity for the King to spend time with his grandchildren would be viewed as significant,” the aide said, “given how little contact there has been in recent years.”

Several royal residences have reportedly been discussed as possible places for Harry and his family to stay, including Buckingham Palace, St. James’s Palace, Windsor Castle, and Frogmore Cottage.

Buckingham Palace is currently undergoing a renovation project estimated to cost around $500 million.

But while Charles may be open to seeing his younger son and grandchildren, Harry’s relationship with Prince William remains deeply frozen.

William, 44, is not expected to meet with Harry during the summer visit. Reports have suggested the brothers have not spoken since Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in 2022.

Harry did meet privately with Charles at Clarence House last year after the King’s cancer diagnosis. During that meeting, Harry reportedly brought a framed photograph of Archie and Lilibet to show his father.

Now, as Harry prepares for what could be one of his most closely watched visits to Britain in years, even a simple photo of his son in a soccer shirt has become part of the royal drama.

To supporters, it was just a proud dad sharing a tender family moment.

To critics, it was another calculated move from a prince still trying to win back a country he left behind.
