Investigators may finally be closing in on a mysterious masked man seen on Nancy Guthrie’s porch before the 80-year-old Arizona woman vanished in a case that has haunted her community for nearly five months.
Guthrie, the mother of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, was reported missing on February 1 after friends became alarmed when she failed to show up for a planned get-together. What first began as a missing-person search quickly took a darker turn after authorities discovered troubling signs at her home and later uncovered chilling doorbell camera footage.
The footage showed a masked man standing on Guthrie’s porch before her suspected abduction. Investigators released still images to the public, hoping someone would recognize him, but his identity has remained a mystery.
Now, former FBI Special Agent Maureen O’Connell says investigators may be getting close.
Speaking with Megyn Kelly, O’Connell claimed she has sources connected to the investigation and said, “they’re getting close to the porch guy.”
O’Connell suggested that once investigators identify the masked man, the case could break wide open. She said she was about 75 percent confident the person would soon be taken into custody.
“That’s big news. That’s huge — big if true, as the kids say,” Kelly replied.
Guthrie disappeared from her Arizona home overnight, sparking an urgent search by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. Search and rescue teams, Border Patrol and other local agencies joined the effort, but the search did not turn up the missing grandmother.
As the hours passed, authorities began to fear something far more sinister had happened. Homicide investigators were eventually brought in after signs at the scene suggested Guthrie may not have simply wandered off.
The case took another disturbing turn when alleged ransom notes surfaced.
According to reports, the letters demanded cryptocurrency in exchange for Guthrie’s return. Savannah Guthrie and her siblings were reportedly prepared to comply, but they first asked for proof that their mother was still alive, especially because she had been dealing with health problems.
Investigators allegedly had the family deposit a small amount of money as part of the ransom process. But when the money was never touched, authorities were unable to track anyone through the payment.
The family reportedly did not send additional money.
Days later, on February 6, the family allegedly received another note that suggested Guthrie had died, according to Air Mail. A later letter sent to TMZ on June 22 did not apologize or clearly explain what happened to Guthrie, but another source who claimed to know details about the case reportedly told the outlet that “time is no longer of the essence,” suggesting she was likely dead.
Still, no body has been found, and the case remains open.
Savannah Guthrie has since returned to Today, where viewers and co-hosts offered support as she continued to grieve privately. But according to RadarOnline.com, NBC reportedly told guests not to bring up condolences on air, hoping to keep the morning show from being overshadowed by the deeply personal tragedy.
An insider told the outlet that Today is built around routine, entertainment and helping viewers start their day, and producers did not want every segment to become focused on Savannah’s family heartbreak.
Savannah reportedly agreed with the decision.
“She appreciates people’s concern,” another source said. “But she doesn’t want sympathy to become part of the broadcast. Her focus is on the show.”
For now, the biggest mystery remains the same: who was the masked man on Nancy Guthrie’s porch?
And according to one former FBI agent, investigators may be closer than ever to finding out.c
