Prince Harry got more than just a front-row view of the NBA Finals — he also found himself in the middle of a painfully awkward courtside moment with Spike Lee.
The Duke of Sussex made a surprise appearance at Game 5 between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs in Texas on June 13, but it wasn’t the game that had people talking. It was his blink-and-you’ll-miss-it exchange with the legendary filmmaker.
Video of the moment showed Harry greeting another guest at Frost Bank Center when Lee appeared to point in his direction, seemingly trying to get his attention.

Harry noticed, turned back around and extended his hand for what looked like a friendly handshake.
But Lee did not immediately take it.
Instead, the Oscar-winning director kept pointing and talking, leaving Harry’s hand hanging in the air for an uncomfortable beat. The royal then appeared to place a hand on Lee’s stomach as the conversation continued.
The awkward moment quickly caught attention online, with fans debating whether Lee had snubbed the prince or simply missed the gesture.
Thankfully for Harry, the frosty-looking exchange did not last long.
After a few tense seconds, the two men eventually shook hands and appeared to share a laugh. Lee and Harry continued chatting, smiling and gesturing as the odd courtside encounter turned friendly.
As Harry walked away, Lee pointed toward himself as if asking for clarification about something. Harry pointed back before returning to his seat.
The strange moment may have had a funny backstory.
Years ago, it was revealed that Harry once used a secret Facebook account under the name “Spike Wells” while dating former girlfriend Chelsy Davy.
Lee previously joked about the royal’s old alias during a 2019 appearance, saying he had even asked Prince William to find out why Harry used the name.
“I asked his brother to find out,” Lee said at the time. “When I know, you’ll know!”
The nickname reportedly combined Harry’s childhood nickname with an alias he used during his time in the military.
Harry attended the game without Meghan Markle, who stayed behind in California.
Instead of sitting courtside with other celebrity attendees, including Timothee Chalamet and Ben Stiller, Harry sat several rows back alongside U.S. Army veteran JP Lane, a member of the Invictus Games community.
The outing also came as the royal family gathered thousands of miles away in London for Trooping the Colour, the annual celebration marking the monarch’s official birthday.
Harry and Meghan have not attended the event since 2022, following their dramatic exit from royal duties and their move to Montecito.
While Meghan was missing from this NBA appearance, the couple have been spotted at basketball games together in the past, including the NBA All-Star Game and Los Angeles Lakers playoff matchups.
