Two children are dead and three others were injured after a side-by-side vehicle carrying a group of young children flipped several times on a rural road in Canada.

The heartbreaking crash happened around 1 p.m. on June 4 in Pouce Coupe, a town in northeastern British Columbia, according to reports citing the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Authorities said five young children were inside the vehicle when it collided with another vehicle on a rural road.

“Five young children were in the vehicle when the driver lost control, resulting in the vehicle rolling several times over a considerable distance,” the RCMP said in a statement.

Police said 8-year-old Jordan Poulin, who was a passenger, died at the scene.

The 7-year-old driver, Jadyn Barrett, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but later died, according to local reports.

Jadyn’s father, Luke Barrett, who was also Jordan’s uncle, shared the devastating news on Facebook after the crash.

“It is with a heavy heart that I share that our family and my nephew’s family experienced a tragic accident on our farm today involving a side-by-side,” he wrote.

“A life was lost, and our hearts are broken,” Luke continued. “Our 7-year-old daughter is currently in critical condition and is being transported by STARS air ambulance to Edmonton. Please keep her and my nephew’s family in your thoughts and prayers as she fights.”

The next day, Luke posted the update no parent ever wants to write.

“My daughter went to Heaven,” he wrote. “She’s running on the streets of gold.”

Three other children in the side-by-side suffered minor injuries. They have not been publicly identified.

The RCMP is investigating the crash.

“As a parent, I cannot fathom the unimaginable and tragic loss these families have suffered,” B.C. RCMP Staff Sgt. Kris Clark said in a statement. “Our hearts go out to everyone who was impacted by this unthinkable event.”

Funerals for Jordan and Jadyn were held Friday, June 12, at Dawson Creek Alliance Church, according to online obituaries.

The tragedy has also renewed attention on off-road vehicle safety. In Canada, provincial rules state that children under 16 are not allowed to drive a vehicle with passengers and must be supervised by an adult, according to CBC News.

Just one day before the deadly crash, the Pouce Coupe municipality posted a warning about the dangers of off-road vehicles as warmer weather brings more ATV, dirt bike, and side-by-side use across the region.

“These vehicles … must be operated responsibly and only in areas where their use is permitted,” the notice said.
