A joyful church celebration in Virginia turned deadly Friday evening when a massive outdoor tent collapsed during a sudden storm, killing one person and injuring 22 others.

The terrifying incident happened around 6:45 p.m. at East Lake Community Church in Moneta, Virginia, as the congregation was marking its 20th anniversary.

According to Bedford County officials, severe weather had moved through the area moments before the tent came down. Heavy rain, lightning and powerful winds battered the church grounds before the structure suddenly failed.

One person was killed in the collapse. Eleven others were rushed to local hospitals, while 11 more were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Church pastor Troy Keaton described the heartbreaking moment in a statement on social media, saying the celebration had turned into “a great tragedy.”

“Just as I had walked to the stage to release people to their cars, a burst of wind picked up the tent,” Keaton said.

The pastor said he did not yet have details on the conditions of those who were hurt. But he confirmed the church had lost one of its own.

“Sadly one of our dear brothers suffered a fatal injury,” Keaton said. “Our hearts are broken for his precious family.”

County officials said the tent had been inspected by local authorities earlier in the week on Tuesday.

Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger said she was heartbroken by the deadly collapse and praised first responders for quickly rushing to the scene.

“My heart is heavy with the news of the tragedy at EastLake Community Church this evening,” Spanberger said in a statement. “I am grateful for the quick response of first responders.”

She added that state officials were in contact with the response team on the ground and would continue supporting the community.

The shocking collapse has left the church and the surrounding community reeling after what was supposed to be a night of celebration turned into a scene of chaos, grief and prayer.
