Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has revealed he secretly went through a terrifying cancer scare after discovering a painful lump while taking a shower.
The 54-year-old former wrestling superstar said he found the lump on one of his testicles and immediately knew he had to get it checked out. But in a shocking confession, Johnson admitted he did not tell his wife, Lauren Hashian, because he did not want to scare her before he knew what was really going on.
“By the way, I’m fine,” Johnson told Esquire. “But I didn’t know that then, and the thing was really painful.”
The Jumanji star, who has been with Hashian for nearly two decades, said he made the decision to keep the frightening health scare to himself until doctors could give him answers.
“I didn’t want to worry her before I knew if it was anything to even worry about,” he said.
Johnson went to his doctor, where he was told the lump could possibly be epididymitis, a painful inflammation involving the tube at the back of the testicle. But doctors also warned him it could be something far more serious, including a possible sign of testicular cancer.
The actor was then told to get an ultrasound right away.
The problem? He still had to get through a major Jumanji event first.
“So, I had to live with that for those 24 hours, not knowing,” Johnson recalled. “And I had to be on all day, joking around, making speeches.”
The Hollywood heavyweight said he is now OK, but the frightening ordeal left him facing a full day of public appearances while privately wondering if he could be battling cancer.
It was not the only health struggle Johnson has opened up about recently.
Last year, the Fast and Furious star revealed he had been dealing with digestive problems for years. During an appearance on The Mark Hyman Show, Johnson said the issue became especially difficult at the start of 2024, when he was preparing for a brutal nine-month stretch of nonstop work.
“I was thinking, ‘How am I going to get through this with my gut issues? I’m not digesting properly,’” he said.
Johnson also used his latest interview to reflect on why he now avoids publicly discussing politics.
The actor previously endorsed Joe Biden in 2020, but later admitted he regretted the move because of how much division it caused among his fans.
“My goal is to bring this country together,” Johnson said. “I believe in that.”
He added that he has no plans to endorse a candidate again.
“There will be no endorsement,” Johnson said. “At this level of influence, I will keep my politics to myself. It is between me and the ballot box.”
Johnson said he has learned that his real focus needs to stay on his work, his art and his storytelling.
“What I have learned through experience is that I need to keep — need, not want — the main thing,” he said. “And the main thing for me, the thing that in the morning I swing my legs out of bed, and I run towards, is creating. It’s art. It’s storytelling.”
He added that politics is everywhere now, but he has no interest in becoming part of the daily firestorm.
“Politics is omnipresent, and it’s forever,” Johnson said. “I don’t like it. I hate it at times. I hate the slinging. I hate all the bulls— that comes with it.”
